The Prophecy

I fiddled with the ancient red-blood book in my hands as I stood outside Rebecca’s front door. The sun was shining brightly and the wind has a certain cool chill to it, making the perfect weather for a Saturday. It was around noon when John told me to go over to help me with my “school project”, he had even taken the day off from work to do so. I had found out that John really enjoyed Greek Mythology and had read lots on the subject in college.

“Hey kiddo!” John grinned as he opened the front door to his home.

I showed him the book in my hands with a smile, “This is it.”

His eyes grinned with excitedness, “Fantastic! Come on in.”

John led me upstairs to his work room. The room was a plain white, with fancy furniture and shelves with stacks papers and books. A desk lay in the middle of the room, making it somewhat look similar to a principal’s office in a way. The room just screamed work place, but had a home-y feel to it.

John grabbed a chair and put it next to the one that was already at the desk, gesturing me to sit down. As I did so, John went to close the door to his work room. He was dressed in casual clothing, a shirt and some jeans, and he wore glasses that I didn’t even know he needed.

I was still a bit hesitant to let him help me figure this whole book thing out, but I knew that I couldn’t go to anyone else. That feeling in my gut is really what kept me going on with this whole “school project” thing, I knew that John could mean no harm - especially if he thought this was just a school project and nothing more. To be honest, I didn’t even know if it meant anything. It could have just been words written in an old book for all I knew.

John sat down next to me in his big, black chair as I threw a smile his way. He returned it and eyed the book I was still holding with eagerness. I set it on the desk for John to observe.

“Where did you get this?” John questioned as he felt the texture of the book.

I shrugged, “It was in the family, they were really into Greek Mythology.”

“I thought you said this was a school project,” he stated while eyeing the D on the cover of the book.

“It is,” I lied, “But, it was the perfect time to use this old thing.”

“Old is an understatement,” he let out a chuckle as he opened to the first page of the book.

“The pages are empty,” I commented as I saw his furrowed brows.

He looked at me confused, “All of them?”

I nodded, “Well, all of them but one.”

I took the book into my hands and flipped to the back of the book trying to find the page with the passage. My hands opened to the right page on the first try, my eyes running over all the words written in Old English. I put the book back in front of John who was looking very perplexed by the words. His eyes held a sort of happiness in them as he read.

I waited patiently for him to finish analyzing the words. I was eager to know what he was thinking, the facial expressions on his face indicating that he was a bit amazed. He read slowly, taking everything in, being sure not to miss any details that could be important. When he came to the end, he ran a finger over the signature and date scribbled at the bottom and turned to me with an amazed face.

“This is amazing,” he whispered in astonishment.

“Do you know what it means?” I asked hopefully, “I’ve tried to understand it, but some things don’t click.”
