8 Hours Before (43)
I walked out into the steam-filled bathroom, water droplets clinging to my heated skin. I hoped that a shower would calm down my nerves and wash away the image of Marty lying dead on the dirt ground. Did it work? Not at all. The image was burned into my mind, forever.
I let out a long breath as I walked to the sink and wrapped a towel around my body. I wiped the fogged up mirror so I could glance at myself for a moment. My eyes widen a bit as my eyes fell on the side of my neck, two tiny pricks lay there - from when Claude had bitten me. I ran my fingers over them lightly and felt an odd tingling, reminding me of when Claude and I had shared the night before. A small smile fell on my face, happiness emerging from within me.
My eyes drifted back up to my face, I looked different. My skin had a certain glow to it but it wasn’t just that, I looked different, I just couldn’t place my finger on it. It wasn’t like I had changed greatly, but it was a subtle difference.
For a moment, I looked in my own eyes and everything seemed to stand still. My hands clutched onto the sink as the familiar feeling began to sink in. I was caught in a trance as words drifted into my ears.
‘I brought you the girl,’ A voice sneered.
‘Good, good,’ Emerson’s voice echoed, ‘Thank you for your services.’
‘This whole thing is over now, right? This is all you wanted, the girl, and now you will leave my people alone, correct? You said I had your word.’
Emerson chuckled, ‘Sure.’
I gritted my teeth as my hold on the sink tightened. After a few minutes, I released my hold and turned away from the mirror, a frown evident on my face. I exited out into the walk-in closet with a sigh. When I caught a glance of a figure standing in the room, a small yelp left my lips.
“Don’t do that!” I half-yelled at Claude, clutching my towel to my body, “What if I was naked or something, hm?”
“Well, I wouldn’t mind that,” Claude murmured with a half smile as he walked towards me.
“Are you alright?” He asked softly when he was right in front of me, “I’ve been worried.”
“I’ll be okay,” I answered as I looked up into his eyes.
He leaned down to kiss my forehead before wrapping his arms around my waist. “I didn’t imagine this would be the way we’d spend the morning after,” he mumbled quietly.
I let out a soft sigh, “Neither did I.”
“So you’ve thought of it before?” Claude questioned, amusement lighting up his features slightly.
“What are you-” I stopped for a moment as a blush crept up on my cheeks, “Claude!”
He chuckled, a grin spreading on his cheeks. For the faintest moment, I swear I saw a pink tint laying on those smiling cheeks of his. I slightly shoved Claude’s chest jokingly with one hand as I held my towel up with the other. His chuckle just deepened as he looked down on me with lit up eyes. I stuck out my tongue at him as his chuckles faded away.
“I’m just kidding,” He said innocently and then added, “Kind of.”
I couldn’t fight off the smile that was appearing on my lips. Just having Claude around me made my happiest beyond reason. A faint whisper in my mind told me I already knew what I was experiencing and why, but I did’t pay much attention to it.
