The Ball

Someone's hand gently nudged me as they unwrapped their other hand from my waist. Instantly, a cold breeze washed over my skin and unease poked at my stomach. I could hear the rustle of someone putting on their clothing next to me as the bed dipped from where they sat on the edge. When they were done, the person neared me and whispered in my ear, "Viola, wake up."

My eyes fluttered open from those three words. I looked at Claude confused, he was had his jeans on and looked ready to sprint out the door. Then it dawned on me, our time was up. It was Friday. It was the day of the Ball.

"What time is it?" I mumbled as I sat up and rubbed my sleepy eyes.

"6AM," Claude sighed, "I think I heard the maids arriving a couple of minutes ago."

"Oh," I practically whispered as I looked away from him.

"Come here," Claude stood up and I mimicked his actions. I wrapped my arms around his waist as he pulled me into a hug. I was suffocated by his scent and by his cold flesh, leaving little tingly sensations on my skin. All I could think was, this is it. I kept repeating it in my head as he clung to me.

When we finally parted, Claude's face had an unreadable expression as he looked into my eyes. Desperately, his hands pulled my chin closer to his so our lips hovered next to each other. He didn't move any closer to me though, our lips never actually touched as we stood alone together. His eyes never left mine either, both of us had no idea what to say now that this was over. What could we say? "Oh hey, I had a wonderful time. Now bye"? "I'm falling in love with you, now go marry some vampire"? This all seemed ridiculous.

"Viola," Claude whispered, his lips lightly touching mine as he spoke, "I -"

The sound of a door opening had both of stepping back from each other immediately. A petite blonde wearing a maid's outfit jumped in the door with a Cheshire grin on her face. The grin fell as soon as her wide eyes found Claude who looked rather annoyed even though his gaze was blank and to the floor.

"Oh! Sorry! Uhm-" Kristen studdered as her eyes darted around the room.

Claude looked back at her with a hint of amusement in his face and then back at me with that same look, though his eyes had a hint of sadness in them. "No problem, erm, Kristen?" Claude spoke, "I was just leaving."

Kristen looked rather surprised that Claude knew her name, or maybe it was because he was being kind to her. He walked past Kristen who looked frozen in her spot and glanced at me one last time before closing my bedroom door behind him. I walked to Kristen and waved a hand in front of her pretty, little face.

"Kristen?" I sang, "Helllooo? Earth to Kristen!"

Kristen's hazel eyes snapped to me and she pounced on me. I fell back with a thud, Kristen hugging me with her giant grin back. "Viola I missed you!" She squealed.

"I missed you too," I laughed, "But get off of me!"

"Sorry, got a bit too excited," She giggled as she stood up and I followed suit.

"So, how was your week vacation?" I asked, genuinely interested.

Her eyes darted from the door to me, and back again. A confused look formed on her face as she tried to process everything that had just happened in the past five minutes. "Did that-" She paused. "Was that-" She paused again. "Wait what?" She asked dumbfounded.

"What?" I furrowed my brows, even though I knew why she was confused.

"My vacation was okay. Went to visit some people, blah blah," Kristen quickly answered, "Now, enough about me. What was Claude doing in your room?"
