It was supposed to be just a silly bet—
Something that came up in passing as they sat waiting for their professors. Their phones weren't enough anymore to quench their boredom.
One goofy sentence was all it took for the whole cascade of chaos to begin unraveling.
"Why not Jeon Wonwoo?"
It was 1 p.m. The trio sat in their usual seats in the lecture hall. One ready to learn, one not particularly bothered but willing to listen, and the third there solely for the cool air and the hour-long nap ahead.
Mingyu turned to Hoshi, the guy who brings a small pillow to school just so he can sleep. He was actually the reason they always sat in the back. They didn't want to look even more like assholes for letting their friend snooze through the entire lecture.
How he managed to pass? Well, that was a story for another day.
"What? Are you crazy? I've never even talked to the guy. And now you're telling me you want me to ask him out for this silly bet?"
"Would it still be silly if I bet a hundred dollars?"
Fiscally irresponsible and morally corrupt are just two things that make Hoshi a ticking time bomb. Not because he has anger issues, but because the man just keeps you on your toes. Always unpredictable with how loose that mouth of his is. It was something Mingyu and Myungho had to learn to get used to in the years they'd been friends.
"Please don't listen to that idiot, Mingyu. If you're really bored, why not join me for a tea ceremony after class? I can even bring out the good tea for you."
Myungho sat on Mingyu's other side, like a little angel perched on his shoulder. Whispering for him to hold on to his sense of rationality and not give in to that little devil's temptations of acting stupid.
"Oh please, I bet clipping my toenails would be a lot more fun than doing that silly tea ceremony of yours," Hoshi snickered, leaning forward to shoot a smug grin at Myungho.
The latter stayed calm, continuing to scan through his notes, not at all bothered by Hoshi's provocations.
"You do what you want, then, Mingyu. But don't come crying to me when you do something stupid, all thanks to that idiot. Don't tell me I didn't warn you."
Mingyu caved and eventually agreed to the bet. It wasn't really about the money. Mostly just the boredom. He'd been feeling down these past few days, and no amount of partying, gaming, or basketball could make him feel excited or even remotely like himself.
Waiting by the gates, Mingyu stood there smiling and waving at everyone who recognized him as they passed. The tall giant standing there like the school mascot. His lips were curled into that polite smile that always seemed to fool everyone, even though he wasn't feeling all that jolly that day.
A pale man emerges from the hallway. Mingyu immediately recognizes him and stands straighter. He walks a few steps forwards trying to stand right in the middle of the gates, just to greet the man he's been waiting for.
"Hey, I've actually—"
Like some ghost. He gets ignored flatly.
The man simply walked past him. To be clearer, he walked around him, then returned to the straight line he had been following before Mingyu decided to plant himself like a boulder in the middle of the exit.
