Not Over You

Bruno came over two days before Christmas. He was trying to convince me to go to Hawaii for the holidays, but I didn't want to. The holidays always made me a mess and I didn't want him or his family to see that.

I was babysitting Ryan's two-year old son, when he came over.

"Who's this?" Bruno asked with a smile as he entered the living room.

"This is Copeland, Ryan's son."

Copeland was playing on my Nintendo 64 and when I say playing, he was just pushing buttons. Bruno and I talked in the kitchen. Jerry kept calling me but I was ignoring him.

"What's going on?" he asked.

Damn it. He figures everything out.

"Nothing. Jerry keeps bothering me."

"I'm really sorry about what everyone was saying about our partying and everything. You didn't even want to come and I kinda forced you."

"Don't be. I'm not sorry. It was the most fun I had in a long time."

Bruno smiled, which made me happy. We sat there in the living room and watched Copeland for a while. He had no idea what he was doing which was really cute.

"You need to come with me, seriously. You shouldn't be alone for the holidays."

"Bruno, it's fine. I don't mind."

Copeland was my escape. I walked with him upstairs to get him ready for bed. He fell asleep pretty quickly. When I got back downstairs, Bruno was playing on Dad's guitar.

"Careful, Copeland's sleeping."

He went to the couch, and started playing a couple of chords.

"Seriously Bruno. Copeland's sleeping. Stop playing."

He stopped but kept begging me. "Come to Hawaii for Christmas."

"No Bruno. Now give me the guitar."

I grabbed the guitar neck but he wouldn't let go.

"Fucking give it now."

"Come to Hawaii." He was so persistent, but so was I. I put up a good fight.

"No."

We fought and fought. I yanked it hard out of his hands but he moved with it.

"Watch it Bruno. You're gonna break it. It's my Dad's guitar." I got a lump in my throat.

"Lily it's been 10 years already!" He yelled. "Get over it!"

He finally ripped the guitar out of my hands and it flew across the room. It did a bunch of flips and the neck snapped. It was old and the wood was very worn. It didn't stand a chance. Jerry told me my Dad had it for a long time, before they met. He told me to take care of it.

"Get out of here!" I cried.

"Fine, fine," he said, grabbing his phone and jacket. "Ya know. There are people who care about you. Mike and Sean came to see you. Did ya forget that? You could easily go see them, but you fucking won't...because you had a fight with Jerry a couple of years ago? You block out the people who raised you, the people you left. Spend the holidays alone, again. I guess that's what you want."

"You have no idea what you're talking about. Just wait until you lose someone important to you. Fuck you, Bruno!" I yelled, feeling tears streaming down my face.

Bruno stormed out of the house screaming, "Fuck you too Lily!"

Copeland came down the stairs.

"Sorry about that Copeland. Go back to bed."
