My mom slid my keys down beside me, them clinking together as the landed on the soft leather sofa. Our eyes met for a moment before she turned away with out a word, her face tired and mouth held in a limp, detached line.

"Thanks mom." I said quietly, tracing the outline of my car key, the mane of the lion keyring tickling my fingertips as it stirred gently in the line of the air conditioning. She nodded at me feebly, not turning around, not looking back, but at least acknowledging me now. At least she didn't have to drive me into school anymore with the radio full volume and the windows wound down allowing the wind to roar in to push away any ideas of conversation. It would be fair to say we were very awkward and I was becoming closer and closer to snapping.

"Your father has your phone. He'll decide when you get it back." My mom's voice surprised me, her form though, already retreating back into the kitchen before I had a chance to reply or thank her.

"Thanks." I mumbled, pushing back my hair and hugging a pillow to my chest. It would be a long weekend...

Monday morning, which to me were usually hell, came as a welcome release and to top it off, my dad, as my mother had suggested, returned my phone the night before, leaving me with millions of texts and missed calls to reply to. I wasn't complaining though, for the first time in a long while I walked from my house with a smile on my face and bounce in my step. I didn't need my parents to talk to me to be happy; which was a good job as neither of them were quite at that stage yet. it was still the week of the cold shoulder... Yippee!

"So, have you heard about the party tonight?" Hannah asked as we wandered down the school corridor, already late for first period so no point in even turning up to it.

"Tonight? But it's Monday, we have school tomorrow." I replied, digging around in my pocket for my lip-gloss. It wasn't even a big pocket!

"No, it's a inset day, teacher training or something, so we get the day off." She shrugged in reply, passing me her mirror after I clasped hands on the lips gloss. Wrong pocket...

"Awesome... don't think my parent's will agree to it though." I sighed, concentrating on my tired looking reflection.

"Just say we're going to Stevie's house. His mom's normally drunk so I'm sure she'll lie for you. He's already invited me around so it'll be cool."

"Wow, you're so modest Hannah. 'It'll be cool if I'm there'!" I mocked her, grinning like a kid on a trampoline.

"You know I didn't mean it like that." She said, rolling her eyes at me.

"Yeah, I know." I admitted, pouting back innocently.

"Don't give me that look-!" She began but we were cut off when the principles door opened right ahead of us, my heart jumping into my mouth. Skiving was only acceptable when you weren't caught!

"Run!" I squeaked, ducking down the adjacent corridor virtually ripping Hannah's arm from it's socket from dragging her behind me.

"Girls!" The principle's voice questioned after us as we continued to run, suppressing laughter as we rounded the next corner heading to the girls bathrooms. I skidded and bounced from the wall before continuing, Hannah cursing lightly under her breath the whole way.

"Get in!" I shoved Hannah ahead of me, my pulse racing as I burst into laughter, wrenching the loo window open and clambering up into the sink. "C'mon." I beckoned her after I'd thrown my own bag out.

"Are you sure?" She pause, looking uneasy.

"Yeah, the principle didn't see our faces so he won't know it was us. We can just hang out around the trees or the game's shed until second period starts." I nodded, holding out my hand for her bag persuasively.

"Okay." She nodded, passing her bag and climbing up onto the sink beside me. "But you have to come to the party now - think of it as a apology." She began to laugh while I slithered through the tiny window.

"Yeah yeah alright, just so long as you and your big head can follow me out through this window!" I jibed, rolling onto the grass as warmth spilled out onto my back, the sun having broken through the clouds.

"Cheers!" Hannah called from inside flatly before following.

"My pleasure!" I grinned in reply, skipping joyously in the sun.

"You look like a really big child!" Hannah joked from behind.

"Yeah?" I asked, my smile growing even bigger. "Well, not as big as your head!"

"Hey!"
