Maine was happy she was tired dahil baka sakali na mas mapadali sa kanya ang makatulog ngayong gabi compared to last night.
She was too angry and too frustrated with the words she exchanged with the villainous RJ Faulkerson to even get some shuteye at halos alas-tres na nang umaga nang tamaan siya nang antok.
The Faulkerson heir's visit this morning did nothing to improver her mood.
Gumapang siya papunta sa kama niya after maglagay nang moisturizer sa mukha and was about to turn her night lamp off nang biglang mag-ring ang phone niya.
She looked at it and saw Patring's name.
She was sure na ganitong oras e malamang ang bestfriend na nya ang nag-aagahan o di kaya ay tapos na ito at gusto lang siyang kumustahin after mabitin ang pag-uusap nila kanina. "Hello" she answered the phone.
"MENGGAY!!!!! I AM ENGAGED!!!!!"
Muntik umikot ang mundo niya sa bigla nyang pagupo sa kama. "WHAT?!?!?!?!?!"
"I can't believe it too! Nag-propose si Sam during breakfast! Ito siya katabi ko, parang sira. HE FLEW IN AND SURPRISED ME! OH MY GOD MENG!!!!"
Maine held on to the headboard of her bed for support staying up.
"Na-shock din siya!" Patring called out to her boyfriend err fiancé now. She was laughing, her happiness bursting and evident despite the distance.
"Meng!" Sam Gogna's voice came through the phone. Patricia had put her on speaker.
"Uy Sam!" was all she managed to say sa sobrang pagkabigla niya.
"Baka mabigla ka pa lalo... we're getting married in a month" he reported.
Nabitawan ni Meng ang telepono.
IN A MONTH?!?!
"Meng? Meng?"
Kinuha niya muli ang phone. "Sorry. Sorry. Nabigla talaga ako."
Tumawa si Sam. "Basta be ready in a month ha? I arranged everything. Ibabalik ko na tong si Patring sa Pinas!"
She clutched at her phone like it was a lifeline and grasped for air. She put on a smile to fake her enthusiasm. "Sige ba! This is super surprising talaga! I cannot believe it! Congratulations you two!"
"Thank you Meng! Kahit ako I cannot believe it pa rin at ikaw talaga ang una naming tinawagan! Tatawag na ako sa bahay ngayon" her bestfriend told her.
"Grabe tong balita nyo" That wasn't a lie "Hindi nyo ako patutulugin."
Tumawa ang mga ito. "Tawagan ka namin ulit when everything has settled down ha?"
"Oo. And Congratulations! I'm at a loss for words."
"Me too" Patricia replied "We just had to call you first! Talk to you later Meng!"
Patring put the phone down and Maine felt energy creeping back into her – only this energy was sucking everything else out.
She and Patring had been friends since Grade 5.
Madalas siyang ma-bully nung mga bata pa sila dahil ang payat payat niya and she often came home crying. Then, Patricia transferred from Manila to their school in Bulacan and the first person she became friends with was Maine.
Even she couldn't remember how it happened anymore pero she was thankful for having her.
And though they were so similar, they even had crushes on the same guy – they never really fought. Someone always gave way to the other.
