Dear Diary,
I remember my sixth birthday party. Both of my dads spoiled me, since it was my first birthday with them. They rented out an entire jungle gym for me and my friends, along with the small lunch area next to it. At first, it was the best party ever, but then it got ruined...
I closed my eyes and sighed. Remembering every moment of the party. I hated reliving this moment as well.
---
I wore my pink shirt, pink tutu and leggings with a silver crown and a pin that says "BIRTHDAY GIRL!" On it. Daddy S wouldn't stop smiling as he finished dressing me.
"You look like a princess!" Daddy S smiled.
"I AM a princess!" I exclaimed.
"Yes, your highness." Daddy S nodded, pretending to bow to me.
Just then, Daddy M came in and smiled as he saw me all dressed up.
"Aww, you two are just too cute!" Daddy M exclaimed.
He then held up his camera and took a picture of the two of us.
---
I took out the photo that was held onto the page by a paper clip. I smiled at the photo awkwardly. Was it because I was so young? Was it because I was obsessed with princesses? Or was it because of Daddy S's face?
---
Before we had left for the party, Daddy S began asking a lot of questions.
"Mark, are you sure you want to do this?" Daddy S asked.
"Yeah, why are you worried?" Daddy M asked. "You're the one always revealing yourself when taking Em out to the bus stop."
"I know but this time it's different!" Daddy S explained. "We're actually going out in public, what if the people who work at the jungle gym or a kids parents or siblings' recognize us and go crazy?"
"Well if an employee goes crazy over us, we can always report the issue, and if a parents child goes crazy over us, that's the parents issue, not ours." Daddy M explained. "I think it's about time we begin taking risks and having fun. This is Emily's sixth birthday! Our first birthday with her!"
Daddy S then sighed and nodded. We then headed out into the car and to "Monkey Business" where the jungle gym area was at. When we got there, my jaw dangled as I saw the huge gymnasium area. It looked never ending.
I looked up at my Dads.
"Go on in!" Daddy M assured.
"Why can't I be little? I wanna go and play in there too!" Daddy S complained.
"I feel you, Sean..." Daddy M responded.
I took of my shoes and raced over into the gymnasium where I met up with my friends Maddie and Sarah.
"Hi guys!" I yelled over the noise.
"Hey Em!" Maddie said.
"What princess are you dressed up as?" Sarah asked.
"A birthday princess!" I answered.
"Cool!" Maddie smiled.
The three of us began climbing up the ladders, going through the punching bags, swinging on a Tarzan-type rope and slid down a small slide. We then had to climb up some more ladders which lead to a trampoline area where we bounced a bit. We then went through a small maze area and through a tunnel. It ended by going down a very big slide. Sarah went down first and then Maddie went down.
My heart pounded out of my chest as I saw how long, tall and steep the slide looked. It looked really high. It almost felt like I was jumping off the building. Which it pretty much felt like it knowing the rooftop was right above me.
I then closed my eyes and began sliding down the slide, screaming all the way down. As soon as I opened my eyes, I was back to the floor. I smiled as I saw Maddie and Sarah and my Dads smiling and waving near me. They were both talking with Sarah and Maddie's moms.
"Where's your mom?" Maddie asked.
"I don't have one!" I said. "Those two guys over there are my Dads!"
"You have two dads?" Sarah asked.
I nodded.
I noticed Sarah and Maddie biting their lips, trying not to laugh. But then they burst out in laughter. Tears began forming in my eyes.
"Why are you laughing?" I asked.
"Because it's funny you have two Daddies!" Maddie laughed.
"It's not funny!" I yelled.
I suddenly ran over to my Dads.
"Baby girl, what's wrong?" Mark asked.
"Maddie and Sarah are making fun of me..." I cried.
The girls' moms immediately called them over.
"Maddie, why are you making fun of Emily?" Maddie's mom asked.
"Because she has two dads!" Maddie responded.
Both Daddy S and Daddy M looked over at me as I was crying on Daddy M's shoulder. They didn't say anything, they didn't know what to say.
"Sarah, is that why you were making fun of her?" Sarah's mom asked. Sarah nodded.
"Well, you know you shouldn't make fun of anybody no matter what!" Maddie's mom responded to both of them.
"I am so sorry..." Sarah's mom said to my Daddies.
"I-It's fine, don't worry about it." Daddy M said. Daddy S then looked at Daddy M blankly. "Kids at that age they probably don't understand... Y'know..."
Daddy M then blushed.
"I get what you mean." Sarah's mom nodded. "I'll make sure that Sarah knows better next time."
"Same with Maddie." Maddie's mom agreed.
With that, both mothers took both Sarah and Maddie home. Even though I had other classmates here, I still felt alone the rest of the time.
I just sat there with my Dads the rest of the party.
---
Later on that night as I was going to bed, both Dads decided to stay in my room and talk to me.
"I'm sorry about what happened at the party, Em." Daddy M explained. "None of us expected that."
"They're my friends..." I said. "I thought they liked me."
"They do like you, Em." Daddy S explained. "I just don't think that they're used to seeing a kid with two Dads, that's all."
"They'll get used to it." Daddy M assured me.
I then nodded.
"But I just wanted to let you know, that you might be getting a lot of comments like that in the future." Daddy M explained. "And just know, that no matter what mean things people say about it, ignore it. It's not worth getting upset over."
"Okay..." I mumbled.
Daddy S then tucked me in and both of them kissed me on the cheek before leaving my room.
