Dear Diary,

Today was my first official day of the marching band season. Around 6pm, we had to meet towards the back of the school for practice. Today, we learned more flag routines that would actually be put in our show. These ones were harder and I dropped my flag a few times. It came to the point where I got frustrated with myself, which none of the members of the Colorguard liked anyone to do, so I was pulled aside and encouraged that I would be able to learn this, and that it doesn't have to be perfect right away. They were right, I should've thought about that. The good news was I was able to get some parts down after the first practice today. But I took my flag home to practice some more tomorrow before practice again.

Today was the first day we practiced on the field. We didn't have to put anything from our routine together yet, but we did have to practice going from one spot to the other. I don't know how I'll actually be able to memorize every single spot, let alone keep my posture up and facing the front of the field. I can't wait until I have to do this while spinning a flag....

Today is our first day of our two week band camp. For Monday until Thursday this week, we have a six hour rehearsal. Then next Monday until that Thursday, we have a TEN HOUR rehearsal, with half hour breaks for lunch and dinner. I guess I should consider ourselves lucky because some bands during this time actually go away from their homes to practice. I know I wouldn't be able to handle being away from home for that long. All I know is that these next few weeks are going to be exhausting. Wish me luck!

Dear Diary,

I SURVIVED BAND CAMP!!! I thought I never would! The first week wasn't as bad as the second week because we were continuing practicing on the field. But for the first time this week, we had to put our flag routine and do it on the field and it was nearly a disaster! I hit a trumpeter on the shoulder and I came to close to another Colorguard member and nearly collided with them. Although everybody made a big deal of me hitting the trumpeter and it almost made me want to drop everything, run back home and cry. It came to a point where the instructor pulled me out and had a long talk with me. It wasn't an encouraging talk like I'm used to, it was a more serious talk, and it was scary and almost made me want to cry some more. But despite all of that stuff messing with my emotions, when Thursday came along, I was so relieved. When we were dismissed that day, I ran out to the car faster than anybody else in the band. I just wanted to get out of there. Now we have three day rehearsals for three hours for the next three months until the state finals towards November!
I would be relieved about that and finally being able to rest a little, but school starts in TWO DAYS and I still need to get all my supplies. Ugh. This week has been Hell.

Dear Diary,

Today was my first day of school. Since I was in the marching band, I had home room with all the band people. It was kind of exciting to have home room with a group of people from different grades. Unfortunately, it wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be because everyone was still recovering from Band Camp. Can't say I blame them though, because I am too.
I didn't have any classes with Kelly, I only only had Ava in a few of my classes. Some of the other band members in my grade had classes with me, but they were the wind players and stuck with their own clique. I will admit though, my teachers are pretty okay this year. My biology teacher is awesome. I heard he plays the Jurassic Park series the last few days of class instead of giving us a final test. That should be cool!

Dear Diary,

Today the band had to go to a football game. I was kind of bummed because it was on a Saturday, and I'm also not crazy about football. But we did get free food after our performance though.
We performed on the field first before the other band. This was my first actual performance ever and honestly, it wasn't that bad. I missed some spots and messed up some routines but overall I was able to get from one part to the next with no problem. I need to try and improve myself before two weeks though, that's my first competition! I'm so nervous but I'm also excited!

Dear Diary,

Today was our first competition. We didn't show our full performance, only 3 out of the 4 parts. None of the bands had an actual full performance either, except for some of the bigger bands and honestly, I don't want to know how much they had to practice more than us to finish the entire performance. I would say for my first competition performance, I probably did a 6 or a 7. I definitely did better than my first football game performance, and I didn't collide with or hit any band members! but there were still some moves from the routine I needed to do better on.
But the good news from this, was that we WON! We got a score of 87.6. I asked Katie if that was good, and she said it was excellent for our first performance, which filled me with relief.
After we got back to the school, Daddy S and Daddy M took me out to celebrate. They said as long as we got a better score than our last performance, we would go out and celebrate! Now there are only 4 more competitions left before the state finals!

Dear Diary,

Today was the chapter championship before state finals and I possibly did my best performance yet!
But we won third place. Which definitely bummed me out. Now our director is having a week long practice before state finals next week. This is going to be so nerve wrecking.

Dear Diary,

WE WON STATE FINALS!!!! Our school was 96.3 and honestly I couldn't have been more excited to win the finals. The weather wasn't the best, it was rainy and miserable. But it was an awesome experience! We competed against 15 other bands in our group. Altogether there were 30 other bands. We had to suffer and watch the other group perform before our results were called. I was never more nervous in my life, but the nerves definitely paid off!
You couldn't imagine the look on my Dads' faces as they announced us as first place. They were probably the most surprised and the happiest out of everyone, including me. We had to stay in position until our school name was called before cheering and celebrating. That was more of a struggle than anything else.
Now that state finals are over, everything is going to be much more relaxing. I can't wait to actually spend the rest of this weekend relaxing!

Hey guys! Sorry this chapter is all diary entries again! I just wanted to include Emily's band experience since last chapter was about her joining marching band. Some of this stuff I wrote is just like my first experience with band. We didn't have state finals, we had an all around competition with other bands from the east coast. We actually performed during a hurricane! A frickin' hurricane! Mix that with the cold weather and it was the absolute worst! But we did end up winning the competition, so it was totally worth it!

Anyways, I'm done rambling! Hope you're enjoying the story so far!

More to come!
