I had to spend the rest of the weekend feeling friendless, but I knew that by Monday, Maddie and Sarah would be my friends again.
However, when Monday came and I was on the bus waiting for Maddie, when she came on, she sat in the back with Sarah. She didn't sit with me like she usually did.
As they got off the bus, I waited for them to talk to them.
"Maddie, Sarah, what's wrong?" I asked.
"We can't be friends with you anymore..." Maddie stated.
"Yeah, sorry..." Sarah said.
"W-Why not?" I asked.
"Because my mommy said so..." Maddie said.
"Yeah..." Sarah nodded, agreeing with her.
"But I thought your mommy said they would talk about it and everything will be fine?" I asked.
"They only said that to be nice." Maddie said. "The truth is they didn't want us being friends with you anymore."
"Is it because I have two Daddies?" I asked.
"Yeah..." Sarah nodded.
"Sorry Emily..." Maddie said before running off to the playground. However, I didn't run off to the playground, I started running past the school grounds, down the block and ran all the way back home. Teachers were running after me but I didn't turn back to look.
As I finally made it home, I opened the door and slammed it, causing Chica to bark and head over to me, as soon as she saw me though, she calmed down.
Just then, Daddy M and Daddy S came down the hall and saw me, with tears forming in my eyes.
"Em, what's wrong?" Daddy M asked. "What are you doing here?"
"I ran home from school..." I sobbed. "Because Maddie and Sarah can't be my friends anymore!"
"Emily, you shouldn't have done that!" Daddy S said. "You could've gotten hurt, or you could've gotten lost!"
"I couldn't stay at school knowing they're not my friends anymore." I said as I hugged Daddy M.After a moment, Daddy M knelt down to my length.
"Em, I'll tell you what..." Daddy M began. "I can try and call both of their parents to see why they can't be friends with you, okay?"
I nodded.
"But tomorrow, I want you to go into school tomorrow and apologize to the teachers for running off like that." Daddy S said.
I nodded again. Daddy M then kissed me on the forehead and helped me take my backpack and sweatshirt off. Daddy M then went and called the school to let them know I was home.
Later on that night after dinner, Daddy M decided to call both Emily and Sarah's moms to see what was going on. He didn't get a response from either of them first, but then after the second time, he got a response from Sarah's mom.
"Hello, this is Mark, one of Emily's Dads... I understand that Sarah told Emily that they can't be friends anymore... And I just wanna know more about that." Daddy M explained.
There was a moment of silence as Sarah's mom was talking but then he continued. "Oh... Oh I'm sorry... I didn't know... But why?" There was another moment of silence, but by the look on his face, what he was saying wasn't good. "Okay, okay that's fine... I'm sorry for calling."Daddy M hung up and called Maddie's mom. She called back, but basically gave him the same response.
After hanging up, he looked at Daddy S upset.
"What's wrong?" Daddy S asked.
"I'd rather not say in front of her..." Daddy M said, referring to me.
"What's wrong Daddy?" I asked.
"Sweetie..." Daddy M said kneeling down. "I'm sorry, but I don't think Sarah and Maddie are going to be friends with you anymore."
"Why?" I asked.
"It has nothing to do with you, sweetie... It's kind of our fault." Daddy M explained.
"How?" I asked.
"Mainly because me and Daddy S are a married couple..." Daddy M explained. "Apparently your friends' parents don't like that."I didn't say anything. In my mind, I was thinking that was the dumbest reason ever, and that maybe they were just making this up. But by the look on both of my Daddies faces, I knew they weren't. They would never be this serious if they were joking around.
Instead of giving them a response, I just hugged them. Because at this point, they were all I had.
I looked at them.
"Does this mean I still have to go to school with them?" I asked.
"As much as I would love to take you out of there right now, I'm afraid you'll have to stay there for a while." Daddy M explained. "But I promise you, you'll make more friends in the future, and you'll probably meet somebody whose parents are just like us! And you two will be friends forever!"I nodded, hoping that would be the case.
Unfortunately throughout the rest of Kindergarten, I never really made any new friends. Basically my only friends were the teachers, who I stuck with during outside time, and my Daddies, who now picked me up and dropped me off at school.
First and second grade weren't really any different. I met new people, but they never really became my friends. I guess because I grew shy and never really grew the courage to approach them and play with them. Or maybe it was because I was stuck with Maddie in my class for those three years and she was playing with everybody, and I was scared of joining in because she would say no to me.
But thankfully, in the third grade, Maddie was not in my class that year. So maybe a new
friendship could possibly start there.
