Haiden's POV
(Six Months)I paced back and forth across the back aisles. She was supposed to be here ages ago. It was almost four when I went into the vents to come down here, and that had been eons ago. I sighed as I ran a hand through my hair. The curls bounced back to my forehead, some hitting my eyelashes like i hadn't even moved them in the first place.
She wouldn't be here one day in the next month or so either. I already knew about that stupid dance that her kind of people went to. They ate as much as they wanted, drank anything and everything, wine that usually could only be bought on the black market was drunk like tomorrow would never come.
They spent all their money on pathetic fabrics used time and time again, over and over.
While people like me, from Walden and many others, scavenged for food and worked hour upon hour to try and make ends meet, just so that our families could survive.
I kicked the leg of the closest shelf. The sound echoed out as the shelf vibrated within itself. I guess today I'm just going to be heading home.
I popped the vent cover off and set it down on the table. I turned and looked out on the room and ran my hand through my hair again.
Where the hell was she?
Was she off with some other guy?Probably. We were just friends after all. She was my tutor in a sense. That's the extent of our relationship. It would never go any further than that. I'm a Waldenite, she's a Phoenician.
I stepped up on the table and pulled myself up into the vent. I turned and saw lights coming from under the doorway, boots hitting metal.
Than as I was about to pick up the vent cover, I heard a pop. I climbed back out of the vent and walked over to the end of the aisle.
I saw Angel run out into the aisle. She smile in relief as she saw me, her flashlight pointed towards me. I looked behind her towards the door and saw the light coming closer, footsteps louder.
I saw her freeze. God forbid, this girl needed a lot of help. Did I always have to save her ass?
I ran to her and wrapped my arms around her waist. I picked her up, throwing her over my shoulder, and made my way quickly back to the back of the room. I set her down and urged her towards the vent. Quickly she got on the table and climbed into the vent.
I jumped up and climbed in after. She rounded the corner and I spun around. I picked up the vent cover and popped it back in as the door opened.
I slid back and around the corner and back next to her. This time she shook and I didn't touch her. I didn't hold her. I let her sit there.
She doesn't show up, and when she does she has me save her ass again.
I'm not the knight in shining armor, I'm not the king or the prince. I don't do this. I watch out for my mother and me. No one else.
She's a damsel in distress and needs someone else. She needs to stick with her own people.
Suddenly I heard shouts. I heard her mumble something beside me. I turned to look at her and saw fear in her eyes.
"What?" I asked her, so quietly that it was almost as if I was mouthing out the words.
She looked up at me, her green eyes looking like she was caught in the flashlight of the guards, her lip was trembling slightly, her honey golden hair with its blonde highlights shimmered as the flashlights drew nearer.
