“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“I thought you’d do something stupid.”

“Like what?”

“Like trying to beat him up or something.”

“As much as I want to do that, I know he’d hurt me.”

Florence looked at him, his hurt look softened. She wanted to tell him how much she loved him, but this wasn’t the time.

“What hurts is that you couldn’t tell me.” He said slowly.

“I wanted to, I only told you now because you can’t get robbed twice and beaten up.”

“So they were lies to hide the truth.”

“Dan I’m sorry.”

“None of it was your fault; I thought the worst of you.”

“Then why were you my friend all this time.”

“Because I knew you needed someone.”

“Do you remember the first time we met?”

“Yes.”

“I told you to go away, I didn’t want any friends.”

“Maybe I should’ve listened.”

“Without you I wouldn’t be here Daniel. I could say I wish I hadn’t met you but then I’d be lying. I’m sorry if you were hurt maybe I should just leave.” The last bit she said sarcastically, they were sharp words and they felt like stab wounds to Dan.

Florence limped out of the room and went into Dan’s room.

She perched herself on the bed and put her shoes on.

Dan walked in.

“Florence, I’m not letting you leave.”

“You can’t force me to stay here.”

“No I can’t. But I can try to persuade you.”
