“We met in a school classroom, the teacher paired us up. I had my hair gelled high and my sleeves rolled up and you thought it made me looked cool, all the girls liked me and even though sometimes they said harsh things to you, I always defended you saying stuff like, I love you and they should go pick on someone else. You and I always came to this tree house to talk and sing afterwards and nothing could tear us apart.” He paused. “Nothing can tear us apart.”
Florence stared into his eyes.
“It sounds perfect.” She said.
Dan kissed her softly.
“We should get back.” Florence smiled and they climbed down the tree.
“Like my story?”
“Story? What story? Wasn’t that our life?”
“Jodie Perkins was no match compared to you anyway, she wasn’t that beautiful either. I remember when that kid, Kyle what’s his name, Simmons, tried to make you like him and for a little while I believed you were cheating but you told him straight and well we got through that year.”
“And Mr Franklin the art teacher caught us holding hands once and started laughing and he always paired us up together if there was a project which I’m very grateful for.”
“Childhood sweethearts.”
“I wish things went like that.” She stopped.
“They did.” Dan smiled and grabbed her hands. He started spinning her.
“I asked you to marry me after these long years because even though we knew we loved eachother we could never say it, in case someone heard our quiet love.”
“A quiet love?”
“It was a secret, but as soon as the word got out we couldn’t hide anymore, I had to marry you because I love you and you were a bit sad.”
“Sad you hadn’t asked all these years but it was worth the wait.”
“And I was cured of limelight phobia and we live in a big mansion with twenty kids and a few kittens and a pool and you would love me so much and we’d be so happy.”
“Daniel, you have always been shy, we will live in a normal house, we will have twenty kids, if that’s what you really want and definitely kittens and maybe a pool and I love you more than anyone else could do, let’s get back.” Florence said.
