Your hands were covering her eyes and with your chest pressed to her back the two of you were walking towards the clearing in the middle of the woods. Although Elena had asked you not to make her birthday a big thing, you had not been okay with just doing nothing.

After everything Elena had been through, after everything that had happened, she deserved a calm night with fun and laughter.

Caroline had agreed with you. She had not even needed that much convincing, already more than happy that she was allowed to do something. She had picked out the music, she had bought the decorations and she had taken care of the gigantic birthday cake.

You had to admit that she had overdone it a little, considering that you, Caroline, Bonnie and Elena would be the only people actually coming to the party, but you had not wanted to be unthankful.

"Are we there yet?" Elena grabbed your wrists, but you shook your head realizing a little late that she couldn't see that right now.

"No, still a few steps to go." You smiled. You were secretly walking a few extra circles around the actual clearing. You wanted this moment to last, you wanted to hold her in your arms for as long as possible.

Elena was the kind of girl who always thought about others before she thought about herself. And in her circle of friends there was always someone who needed saving. Moments like this, where it was just you and her and no one else, were rare.

A lot rarer than you would want them to be.

"Are we there yet?" She tightened her grip around your wrists and you sighed, taking one last turn to get her on the right path.

"Yes, we're there." You took your hands away and you saw how Elena's eyes widened before she turned around her arms crossed over her chest.

"Why did I fall in love with you again?" Her lips were curling up into a smile. "I told you I didn't want a party!" The smile now reached her eyes and she leaned on the tips of her toes. "Thank you so much." She whispered while she kissed you lips.

"It's only Bonnie, Caroline and us, don't worry." You wrapped your arms around her and pressed her to your chest. "Because we're happy that you've survived another year."
