"Now you're speaking my language." I smirked. "How much we talkin'?"
"Oh that all depends on the job you take. Our options range from civilian rescuing, collecting supplies to assassinating the evil." She went over to a remote and clicked on it. Out of no where, a protector and a screen came out of the ceiling and displayed all the jobs.
I gawked at the money reward. They were triple, no perhaps even more the normal amount I got. I stared at all the options and quickly pointed at the most rewarding assassinating job. "Sign me up for that one."
Her lips slightly curled up as she nodded. "Alright. But we can't send you out of the field just yet. Though I'll leave a spot open for you so when you're done your training, you can participate in it without waiting... If it's still incomplete that is."
"Training? Come on, you're taking to a child mercenary here. I already have the skills to-"
She cut me off by shushing me. "Yesss, you have the street knowledge, but you don't have the professional knowledge. Just do it. It only takes about 3 years to finish, and it hones all your skills."
"3 years!?" I yelled out. "Who the hell is gonna be training for three damn years just to do one job!?"
"Well you could always finish it sooner. The earliest I ever seen someone finish is one year. You're smart aren't ya? You can totally finish it within a year." She tussled up my quills on top of my head and laughed.
I glared at her and wrinkled my nose.
"I'll send a escort over here to pick you up and head over to the training campus." She saw my bitter expression and pouted. "Awh, don't be like that. Don't you want the money?"
I bit my bottom lip and pfft. Someone entered the room and bowed their head to me. What the hell, they got here so fast. "That's the escort by the way." Victoria chirped. "Run along, I hope to see you on the fields soon." She winked and waved goodbye to me.
I slowly followed the escort to the elevator and sighed. I can't believe I'm doing this just to get some money.
                              "W-wait!!"
Before the elevator door could close, the blue eyed girl rushed into the elevator, colliding her body with mine.
"Hey watch it!" I pushed her off my chest and folded my arms.
"S-sorry!" She put up her hands in defence. "I hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna watch you train, alright?"
"Huh?" I said in a dull tone. "Why?"
She blushed and looked down at her feet. "You seem very interesting and... And... You seem like you could use the company." She finished off her sentence with a smiled.
"Hmph. Whatever." I turned my head away from her face and stared at the wall. Annoying brat...
                              ---
A couple of months has past since I began my training. Though I hate to admit it, I actually liked it. Not only was I passing all the classes in both academics and in the field, I was on the track to finish within a year. I learned how to handle my knife skills way better, became the number one sniper in the whole class and enhanced all my senses. Right now, I was sparing with another Mobian. Of course I was able to take him down by kicking him right in the rib cage. Good thing they make us wears these heavy duty vests. Hmph, I don't need one though. It was true, not a single person has landed a direct hit on me.
                              "Good job Shadow!"
I felt a cheek muscle twitch as I clenched my teeth together. I walked off the sparing grounds and in the direction of the voice. In every single practices from day one, that dumb, annoying blonde hair human girl came and cheered me on. It was incredibly annoying and everyone would give us weird looks.
As I approach her. She was clapping her hands and sitting down on the floor.
"Seriously, you're here to very single practices of mine. What's the deal, huh?" I threw down my vest beside her and stood before her.
She simply continue to smile and giggled. "What? Can't a friend cheer for their friends?"
A friend? I stared at her blankly and shook my head. "Sorry, I don't have friends." I coldly stated.
She playfully tsk and folded her hands together. "Don't say that, because I'm your friend! And friends help each other out."
I frowned. Who does this girl think she is? Maybe that Victoria chick send this girl to keep an eye on me. I glanced down at the tracking device they placed on me. They have this on me though, why send in another pair of eyes to watch me?
                              "Look out!" Someone cried out.
My ears twitched as I sensed something coming at us. I snap my head back up to see a flaming arrow heading straight for the blonde girl's back. I looked into her eyes, and she was completely unaware she was in danger. I bit my lip as I dashed around her and stood in my fighting stance. Just before the arrow could pierce through my exposed chest, I caught it and snapped it in half in my hand. I then dropped it on the ground and stomped out the fire. I looked back up to find the archer running in a zig zag while continually yelling sorry.
"Y-you saved me!" The blonde girl grabbed my arm and beamed up at me.
I felt my cheeks flush with pink, and quickly turned away. "It was an instinct of mine to grab the arrow. Nothing mor-"
"It was an instinct because we are friends, right!?" She interrupted me.
I shot her a look of annoyance, then soften my expression when I saw her face. How can she be happy all the time? She almost got killed yet she still has those bright lit eyes. How can she stay like that?... What does happiness even feel like...? I cleared my throat and adverted my eyes from her's. "U-um..." I stammered, still trying to keep myself calm. "What's your name?..."
Her mouth hung open for a second before her lips curled into an ear to ear smile. "Maria!" She exclaimed. "My name is Maria!"
