Evangeline POV:

I sat on an antique sofa across a coffee table from the hybrid who was currently eyeing me like a lion looks at its prey. "That was a truly admirable story, love, but I gave Elijah to Marcel to garner his trust." Niklaus spoke, hands folding in front of his face as he leaned with his elbow on his knees. "I cannot just ask for him back."

"So you're bowing to Marcel now?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow in disbelief. He wasn't someone who answered to others, especially lesser men like Marcel. "Doesn't sound very Klaus to me."

Klaus simply laughed at my words, taking a sip from his glass of bourbon. "I'm protecting you." He hissed and stood from his chair, pointing the hand that held his bourbon at me. "You and my child. Marcel is less likely harm one of you if he believes we are all playing on the same side, by giving him Elijah I have garnered his friendship."

"You think I'm gonna believe that somehow, your icy heart has melted and you actually give a damn what happens to me or to that child?" I could almost laugh at the thought, sure there was a time when I could be manipulated into trusting his poisonous words. "You've finally gone mad."

"I understand we've had our issues, but that's what people do." Klaus replied, downing the remainders of his glass before he poured himself some more. "Now Evangeline, if you are planning to remain here in my city I would suggest you make your allegiances very clear."

I scoffed at what he was insinuating. "Elijah aligned himself with you, look what happened to him. What's to stop you from getting rid of me too?"

"That's true, after all you have done to me, I should deliver to you some form of punishment." He muttered and I straightened myself up in my chair. "Something like murdering your friend, forcing you to live in fear of me, turning your brother into a monster. I'd say your punishment has been delivered."

I couldn't help the absolute disgust that made its way onto my face. "You're a monster, Klaus, and if I have learned anything from knowing you, it's that you should never be trusted."

"Am I to take this as you aligning yourself with that imbecile Marcel and his band of children?"

"While aligning myself with Elijah's captor could prove beneficial to his safety, I must first protect myself. To do that, I have to put myself on the winning side. We both know which side that is."

"I'm glad you are acknowledging my inevitable victory." He smirked and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at his arrogance. "I guess that means you'll be staying here, I'll have a room made up. Unless of course, you wanna share."

At his words I stood from my seat on the sofa and giggled. "You really are crazy. I will align myself with you, but I will not fall right back into the prison of your venomous clutches. I'll find myself a place to live, as far away from you as I can get without leaving the city."

"It's absolutely precious that you think I'm giving you a choice." Klaus chuckled as he poured himself another glass of liquor. "You will stay here."

I scoffed. "You do not tell me what I can and cannot do, if I stay here with you who I came here to escape then Marcel will know something's up. It's better for the both of us if I go out and get my own place."

"Earlier you were trying to jump my bones, now you want some space." Klaus recalled and I pursed my lips, that seemed like forever ago now. "At this rate, am I to assume you will be trying to jump my bones again tomorrow?"

I remained silent, studying him. He was still seated in his chair with a glass of liquor in his hand and the bottle on the table in front of him. I could tell he caught on to my staring when his lips tugged into a smirk. "Or have you already changed your mind about that space?"
