Chapter 32: Lipstick Stains

Third Person POV:

Elijah wasn't sure what had come over him that had led him to this, his lips moving against Evangeline's and his right hand gripping her arm while his left hand held her cheek. He had heard a bit of Evangeline's conversation with Nicklaus before he had knocked on the door. Evangeline was just beginning to regain her sense of self, Elijah couldn't let her fall for his brother's manipulations. That's what he told himself at least, but he knew he was losing control. He'd lost control the second her eyes had met with his, she was so close and when she stepped back he couldn't control himself. He wanted her close again.

Evangeline's mind was spinning as her lips moved with Elijah's, arms wrapping themselves around his neck as her back was pressed against the mirror behind her. She couldn't help but feel she was playing them, she had hid Klaus from Elijah and was now making out with Elijah most likely within earshot of Klaus. It made her feel something she had never before felt and she didn't know if it was a good feeling or a bad one. All she knew right now is that Elijah's lips felt so good and his hands on her made her feel safer than she had felt in months.

Elijah began to move his hand from Evangeline's arm to the zipper of her dress, but he stopped himself before he got there. Regaining his self control he removed his lips from hers, her breathing was heaving as her head fell back to rest against the mirror.

Elijah removed his hand from her face, but didn't move away from her. Instead he studied her for a while. Her dress had been displaced ever so slightly and her lipstick was smudged around her lips.

Evangeline got control of her breathing a few moments later, her body still relaxed against the mirror. Her eyes moved to Elijah and she couldn't help but giggle a bit when she noticed her lipstick had found its way to his face. "What is it?" Elijah questioned, half already knowing what she was giggling about.

Evangeline pointed to his lips confirming Elijah's suspicion and Elijah glanced behind Evangeline to look at his face in the mirror where he found Evangeline's lipstick. "I'll go get you something to fix your lipstick." Elijah smiled before disappearing into the bathroom.

He returned seconds later, his face free of lipstick with a damp washcloth in his hand. "Here you go." He handed her the washcloth which she happily accepted.

Evangeline turned to the mirror and began to carefully wipe the lipstick away, trying not to mess up her makeup anymore. "I guess I'll just go without lipstick tonight." She told him with a small smirk on her face.

"You could just reapply the lipstick." Elijah pointed out.

She shook her head, another small giggle escaping from her lips which Elijah found himself looking at more and more. "If I did that, it might just get smudged again."

"We should really be going." Elijah quickly replied, finding himself a bit taken aback by Evangeline's newfound attitude. He knew if they didn't go now they never would. Elijah held his elbow out to Evangeline. "Shall we?"

Evangeline wrapped her arm through Elijah's with a grin on her face. "We shall."

The music was blasting through the speakers as Elijah and Evangeline descended the stairs to the party. Arms still linked together they greeted guests until Evangeline finally spotted Hayley. She recalled Elijah saying that Hayley had been looking for her and excused herself from the conversation she was currently in to go and talk with Hayley.

"Evangeline!" Hayley greet her with a hug with Evangeline returned. "What took you so long?"

Evangeline's eyes flickered around the room, unable to keep her nerves at bay. "Can I tell you something?" She asked Hayley who nodded quickly. "Elijah and I had an....... encounter just now."

"An encounter?" Hayley inquired, confused by Evangeline's reply. "What kind of encounter?"

Evangeline glanced around the room before leaning into Hayley's ear. "He kissed me." She whispered and Hayley couldn't control her surprise, mouth agape as Evangeline moved away from her ear.

"For real?" Hayley couldn't believe it, she could tell something was between the two of them but she hadn't know it would become something like that. "I'm happy for you, maybe now you can move on from Klaus and everything he's put you through."

Evangeline's eyes bulged at the mention of Klaus. "You can't tell him, you absolutely cannot tell Klaus." Evangeline spat out quickly. "You know how he is, he'd probably box Elijah up for another century."

"Don't worry, I won't tell a soul." Hayley promised, drawing an x shape over her heart. "Cross my heart."

Evangeline grinned at that. "I knew I could trust you."

"Us girls have to stick together." Hayley laughed.

Evangeline laughed along with her before recalling that Hayley had something to say. "You were looking for me? What did you need?"

"I just wanted to say hi, it's been a while since we last saw each other and I missed having a girl around to talk to."

Evangeline nodded in agreement with her. "I heard there's a werewolf in the bayou, Jackson. What's he like?"

"He's really nice, all the wolves are." She smiled as she talked about them and Evangeline felt her heart warm with happiness. Hayley had found her family.

Klaus watched as Evangeline talked to Hayley, both of them smiling and laughing with each other as they talked. He felt himself start to smile just watching Evangeline smile, she seemed so happy. "Brother." Klaus' peaceful spying was interrupted by his brother's voice. "I see you decided to join the party."

"I could say the same for you, brother." Klaus replied, glancing over his shoulder at Elijah before returning his gaze to Evangeline. "The two of you joined the party later than I did."

Elijah leaned against the railing of the balcony, following his brother's gaze straight to Evangeline. "Well Evangeline isn't the fastest when it comes to getting ready, she's a strong advocate for being fashionably late." Elijah smiled watching Evangeline interact with Hayley.

"Has she always been close with Hayley?" Klaus asked, feeling a bit out of the loop. How could he not know something like that? "They look like best friends out there."

Elijah shook his head. "Evangeline didn't like her in the beginning, I'm not too sure when they became close." Klaus felt a bit reassured that even Elijah didn't know when they became close. "Though I do recall being daggered in a coffin for three months so maybe sometime during that period of time."

"Bygones, brother." Klaus placed his hand on Elijah's shoulder, sensing Elijah's contempt. "But on the topic, a little birdy told me of your plans to move out of the compound."

Elijah turned away from watching Evangeline to glare at his brother. "And here I thought we might have a civilized conversation for once."

"No worries, dear brother." Klaus chuckled, hand still on Elijah's shoulder. "I plan to be nothing less than civilized about this."

Elijah raised an eyebrow. "Somehow I doubt that."

"If I were planning to be uncivilized, I would have daggered you already."

"Lets see how long you can keep that up, Niklaus, how long it takes before your possessiveness takes over and you come pounding on the door."

"You'll be waiting an eternity, brother." Klaus responded confidently, which only made Elijah believe him less. Klaus was incapable of watching people move on without him, especially Evangeline. "In the end, it'll be Evangeline who pounds on my door."

Elijah laughed under his breath. "I think it's a bit funny how after all you have done, you still think that."

"She's forgiven me for worse things."

"You can only betray someone so many times before they stop trusting you in the first place."

"I suppose we shall see, brother." Klaus looked back to the crowd, finding Evangeline still with Hayley. "But if I know anything about Evangeline it's that she will always, eventually, make her way back."

Elijah also turned to look at Evangeline. "I suppose we shall see, whether or not you know a thing about her."

"I suppose we shall."
