Evangeline POV:

Elijah and I were dancing, making small talk, when the sound of a table crashing from behind me interrupted the peace. The music came to a halt and I turned to look at the source, where I found one of Hayley's werewolves picking himself up off the ground as Diego began making his way over.

Elijah glanced around, finding the nearest vampire and calling him over. "You stay with her." He ordered the vampire who simply nodded at the request. "Don't let anyone touch a single hair on her head or it'll be you I come for."

"Elijah—" I wanted to tell him he was being ridiculous but before I could he disappeared in the crowd, leaving me with my vampire bodyguard.

Diego and the werewolf had begun grappling at each other, fighting before Elijah made it there and pulled the werewolf from Diego.

I watched closely as Elijah held the werewolf's face against a countertop with his hand. "This ends now." Elijah told the struggling werewolf as Diego relaxed against one of the pillars. "I won't ask again."

"Oh we'll end it alright." The werewolf I recognized as Jackson spoke next, holding a stake firmly against Diego's chest.

Elijah and Jackson held eye contact for a while and I attempted to step forward to stop this madness, but the vampire Elijah had tasked with my safety held me back. "If you go over there Elijah will have my ass," the vampire told me, "please just stay here."

"What's stopping you?" It was Hayley who spoke out against this violence. "Kill him." I was a bit taken aback at her words, why on earth would she even suggest that? "Go ahead, Elijah, do it. I mean it's not like he doesn't deserve to die. I mean it was Oliver who handed Rebekah over to the witches so they could torture her, but then again wasn't it Diego who led a werewolf massacre last month, and the witches cursed the wolves while the humans stood back and let it all happen. So when you think about it, everyone here deserves to die."

I really hoped Hayley was approaching a point better than 'kill everyone'. Apparently Elijah felt the same because his next words were, "are you approaching a point?"

"My point, Elijah, is this. If we can't all learn to get along, if our families can't create some sort of community, then what's the point? Kill each other and get it all over with."

I could see Elijah pause for a moment before retracting the hand restraining the werewolf, who I now assumed was Oliver. Jackson withdrew his stake from Diego shortly after.

When Elijah returned to me, he dismissed the vampire he'd tasked with protecting me with a quick 'thank you for watching her'. "You know I'm pretty sure Diego started that fight, Elijah." I pointed out with a smile, hopefully he knew I was just teasing him. When he returned the smile I figured he'd gotten what I was trying to do. "I'm also pretty sure that vampire you enlisted to guard me wasn't even a quarter my age."

"Well he was more of a babysitter than anything." Elijah teased back and I rolled my eyes.

We remained quiet for a while, Elijah's eyes focused on the people around him most likely looking out for any other potential outbursts. I placed my hand on Elijah's shoulder and he glanced down at me. "I'm going to head upstairs, I'm a bit exhausted from today's events and a bit hungry so I'll probably have a bloodbag or two."

"Do you want me to take you back to the hotel?" Elijah asked me, studying my expressions carefully.

I shook my head. "I can make myself comfortable upstairs, if that's okay with you?"

"Of course, Evangeline." Elijah nodded. "I'll take you up."

I shook my head again, I didn't want to take him away from the guests he had invited here. They may think it's rude of him. "You have guests and a treaty to sign soon, I'll see you when that treaty is signed."

"Alright, don't hesitate to call for me if something is wrong." He told me and I smiled, nodding my head knowing he was probably going to come upstairs to check on me anyways. "You're welcome to anything, so you don't need to ask."

-

An hour or so later I was sat in one of Elijah's chairs, reading an old book I had found on his bookshelf. Although the book hadn't proved very entertaining thus far, it was better than sitting in silence doing nothing. Elijah had texted me a couple minutes ago to say he would be up soon and I had replied telling him not to rush.

After coming upstairs I had helped myself to Elijah's closet, plucking out a silk dress shirt, black in color. I had taken a quick shower, washing away the makeup and hairspray. My hair was still damp from the shower and I had wrapped myself in a blanket I'd found in the chest at the foot of Elijah's bed.

"Well don't you look comfortable." A voice spoke up and my eyes looked up to meet Elijah's as he stood in front of me, still dressed in his suit but he had loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top button of his dress shirt. "I figured you would have been asleep by now."

I closed the book I was reading, placing it on the table beside the chair I was occupying. "I thought about it but I knew you'd wake me up when you got back, so I decided to hold off."

"You didn't even hear me come in." Elijah retorted, holding his hand out to me. I took the hand and he pulled me up from my seat so that I was standing directly in front of him. "It's time for all good little vampires to be asleep."

I pursed my lips. "Aren't some vampires nocturnal, Elijah?"

"I suppose some of them may be." He nodded in agreement. "But you are not one of them."

I narrowed my eyes. "Who says I'm not?"

"You're being difficult."

"I'm always difficult."

Elijah raised an eyebrow. "You were being so well behaved today, doing as you're told."

"Who says I can't be both?" I crossed my arms over my chest, at this point I was arguing simply because I hadn't done so all day. I need to release that argumentative side somehow. "But I suppose you are right, I'll need my sleep if I am to be fully energized tomorrow to make up for the lack of defiance today."

Elijah laughed at this. "Into bed you go then."

"Are you sure you're okay with me staying here tonight?" I asked Elijah, wanting to be sure of it before I got comfortable underneath the warm blankets. "I can go back to the hotel."

Elijah waved his hand in dismissal and laughed again as I launched myself onto the bed, nestling underneath the covers. "I wouldn't dream of making you go back this late at night, or at all, you can stay here whenever you want."

"Thanks Elijah, I promise I'll only hog the sheets for tonight." I held my pinky out and watched as Elijah's face morphed into one of absolute confusion. "It's a pinky promise, Elijah. If I don't keep my promise you get to break my pinky."

Elijah's brows furrowed. "Why would anyone make a promise that way?"

"If I keep it I get to break your pinky." I joked as I grabbed his pinky and linked it with mine. "This is how it's done."

"Just know that I'm only doing this to watch you try and break my finger."

"You only did it because I forced your pinky." I shot back, releasing his finger. "And I was joking about the pinky breaking. Nobody is breaking anyone's fingers."

"What's the fun in that?"

"You want to have a broken finger?"

"You couldn't break my finger anyways so what's the harm in watching you attempt to do it?"

I glared at Elijah which caused him to start laughing to himself. "Just for that I'm going to prove you wrong."

"Go to sleep, Evangeline." Elijah placed his hands on my shoulders and pushed me to a laying down position. "The sleep deprivation is causing you to go insane."
