Klaus sat alone in the living room in the aftermath of his fight with Evangeline, he'd lost track of how many glasses of bourbon he'd had before he resorted to simply drinking directly out of the bottle. Every few seconds he would look over at the broken glass on the floor, regretting what he had done.
Hours had gone by and she had yet to come back, it was putting him on edge. What if she left town? What if she's gone back to Marcel? What if she had gotten Elijah back? His blood was practically boiling with a jealousy he had never felt before as he though back to the moments before he had daggered Elijah. The words that had led him to do what he had done.
"Where's Evangeline?" Klaus had questioned his brother, figuring he probably wouldn't know after their fight earlier but wanting to get on his brother's nerves.
Elijah had looked up at him. "She's safe, I've given her a place to stay a bit outside the quarter."
"Don't you think she would be safer here?" Klaus inquired, trying to contain himself from showing any signs of anger. He hadn't expected them to make up so quickly. "Staying by herself doesn't sound very safe."
Elijah looked up at him and smiled, a smile that only made Klaus more angry. "No need to worry brother, I was planning to stay there with her. I'll keep her safe."
That was the last straw for Klaus. The thought of Elijah and Evangeline staying in the same place by themselves angered him, he couldn't remember a time when he'd felt so much rage at his brother. "Why doesn't she stay here with us?"
"She came here to be away from you." Elijah replied bluntly. "I won't force her to live in the same house as you if she doesn't want to."
Klaus had laughed, thinking back to earlier that day when he had seen Evangeline. "She didn't seem to care about being close to me when I saw her earlier. In fact, if I recall correctly, she was all over me."
"She was upset."
"She slept with me."
They had stared at each other in silence then, both of them irritated at the other. Elijah couldn't help but feel sick, he could guess something had happened but he wouldn't have thought she would so easily let him back in her bed. His only thought now was keeping her away from him.
"You know right before she went to you, she came to me. If I hadn't turned her away the outcome might have been completely different." Elijah responded as calmly as he could, regretting that he had pushed Evangeline right into the arms of his brother.
Klaus raised an eyebrow. "Are you saying she would have slept with you instead?"
"Not at all, but she wouldn't have slept with you."
Klaus was a bit taken aback that his brother was being so forward right now. "Maybe not then, but she would have come back eventually. She always does."
"That's because she has nowhere else to go." Elijah retorted, determined to make his brother see that he wouldn't get what he wanted this time. "This time, she has me. I will make sure she always has somewhere to go, so she won't go to you."
"What makes you think you can keep her away?"
Elijah eyed his brother, neither was willing to concede to the other. "She loves me. You know that otherwise you wouldn't be so angry right now."
"And you love her." Klaus muttered bitterly. "But there is one thing, brother, that you've forgotten."
Like a viper Klaus drew the dagger from his coat, driving it as hard as he could through his brother's chest. "With you gone, there's nothing to stop me from taking her back. When you wake up, she'll be mine again."
