"Ladies and gentleman, my closest friends, allies and fellow counts" The count rose from his chair and caught the attention of all in the crowds. "I am very thankful for your presence on this tremendous night"
A few claps erupted from some people as they listened.
"For this is the night we celebrate the unison of my eldest son Tristan de Martel and the lovely lady Marianne Auclaire through holy matrimony"
The pair nodded, smiled and waved; the whole thing looking completely staged and the two standing like statues in an exhibit. Every single movement looked rehearsed.
Elijah looked closer, he read between every line on her face. Her playful smile, the way her lips pressed together as she did so. He examined her piercing green eyes, they were somewhat magical.
He then lowered his gaze to her blood red necklace, and then to her fingers where multiple rings graced. He had the gift of being able to tell if someone was a witch, he grew up surrounded by them. He also shared the blood of one.
Yet, Elijah couldn't seem to tell if she was a witch. He needed to get her alone, or closer just to see.
Niklaus was already planning on ascending upon Aurora, he knew that for a fact. But it was Tristan he needed to rid before he could speak to Marianne.
Lucien had explained how diabolical and monstrous Tristan is, and how overprotective he was over the women in his life.
"Rebekah" Elijah took her attention, his sister had been integrating herself into high society and mirroring behaviours she had seen by others.
"Excuse me for one moment" she nodded towards a group of women she had been telling about adventures beyond her wildest dreams. Of course she lied, but it showed her that she could be anything or anyone she pleased.
"I need you to distract Tristan so I may speak to the girl alone" Elijah made it sound easy, he made it sound not the slightest bit dangerous. But Rebekah had flourished within this society and if anyone could stretch that far, it would be her.
"That Lord who Lucien has spoken dreadfully of? The Lord who Lucien has told us to stay away from?" Rebekah listed the warning signs that they had been handed, the warning signs that were obviously there.
"Come on sister, when have you been one to play by the rules?" Elijah smirked playfully as he raised his eyebrows and gave Rebekah a certain look that made her chuckle.
"I have never been one to play by the rules, Elijah, we all aren't" she mirrored his smirk as she tiptoed to see above the heads of everyone in the crowd. "I'll go in first and you can follow"
Elijah watched as his sister kicked into action and pushed through the crowds to appear in front of the couple. He watched her curtesy and introduce herself.
Tristan bowed his head and quickly kissed Rebekah's hand. Elijah could barely hear due to the noise of everyone else's conversation.
It was when Rebekah lead Tristan off on to the dance floor when Elijah pushed through, following the trail Rebekah left.
"Lady Auclaire, excuse me but may I have a word in private?" Elijah had almost forgot her last name, but luckily he had heard someone say it before he reached her.
The girl spun around to see who was calling her name, her eyes landing on Elijah. She looked him up and down, as he stood in front of her, at risk to anything she might say.
But he felt somewhat different. This man was strange and Marianne preferred to distance herself from people like these. "vous devez être nouveau ici , je ne l'avez pas vu votre visage ici avant" she spoke fluently and effortlessly before taking a sip of champagne.
"I apologise" Elijah tried to catch up with what she had said, but he couldn't "I do not speak French" he could, but only some parts; he was not yet fluent enough to understand what she had said.
"I said, you must be new around here, I have not seen your face before" she repeated in a translated version for him.
"You are correct" he smiled nervously "I am not from around here, I am-"
"-then I do not have any business with you, my Lord" she cut him off "my apologies but my time is far too valuable"
She left Elijah frozen and speechless. He had never met someone so fiery within a first meeting. His lips parted as to say something but Marianne had already made her exit by the time Elijah had even thought to catch her.
"What did she say?" Rebekah had seen the girl escape and her curious mind wanted to know immediately.
"That her time was to valuable to speak to strangers like you and I" he recapped, still stunned
"Well; what do we do now?" She asked
"I could sense it, the girl is a witch hiding in plain sight. We need to show her that we need her, even if it is by force"
