Chapter 17

"Sh!" Kristina brought her finger to her lips. Gaby had given her a gun that they left on the couch.
Katia, Devin and Gaby each grabbed a bat, while Elizabeth clutched a gun. The crouched ready to run out the door. They sat with their backs to Kristina.
Xander and Ash crouched side by side under a table, so they could see the door. They both clutched a dagger in their hands.
Jax concealed himself near the outside door for an easy escape, while Kristina kneeled on the cushions of the leather couch her gun pointed at the door.
"Uh...." Romeo said uncertainly as he approached the door.
They had elected Romeo to open the door to the 'wounded stranger.' Suddenly, Romeo forcefully opened the door. A girl stumbled in and collapsed on the floor.
Kristina swung her legs over the couch and jumped off. Xander and Ash ran to her side. Gaby, Katia, Elizabeth and Devin surrounded the stranger trapping Kristina, Xander, and Ash inside the circle. Jax walked over and inspected the stranger.
The girl knelt down her hair covering her face. The bite on her leg dripping red onto the carpet.
"Guys the girls getting blood on my carpet!" Nathan complained.
"Shut up!" The group yelled.
They all stared down at the girl.
She had olive colored skin with light brown hair. She was tall with a slim frame. Her hair curtained her face. She wore blue skinny jeans stained with blood and dirt. Her orange shirt was cut up exposing most of her stomach. She lifted her head looking dazedly around the room with clouded eyes.
"Kalani!" Jax shouted and ran up to the injured girl.
"Jax get off me!" Kalani shouted fully aware of her surroundings. She winced.
Jax ignored the girls protests and continued to hug her. Jax turned his desperate gaze towards Kristina.
"We have to help her!" Jax exclaimed.
The group gave a worried look to Jax. He gave the phrase brawn over brains justice. He wasn't that stupid, but he was best known for his strength. He was a guy without much emotion except for suppressed anger, happiness, and calmness.
Xander made a motion that told the group to follow him. The whole group except Jax and Kalani moved towards the outside door.
"Guys that's his sister." Xander explained.
"Like by blood?" Elizabeth asked. Kristina looked into her face and smirked. She knew Elizabeth enough to know who she liked and who she didn't. She liked Jax, but Kristina couldn't tell why.
"No, in the underground base Kalani's parents adopted Jax. They are really close." Ash answered.
"So we absolutely have to help her?" Kristina asked. She didn't want Kalani here. People just kept coming and coming.
"Yes! Did you not hear what I just said?" Ash replied.
"Well if you don't want to lose Jax you would need to help Kalani. I see why you don't want another person, but we don't have much time to decide." Romeo added.
"You guys talk about her like she's going to live much longer. Why?" Katia asked confused. She had seen the blackish, blueish, and greenish bite. She had only so little time. Plus, she did declare she was bit upon entrance.
"What do you mean Katia?" Romeo asked his brow furrowed in confusion.
"Well she got....bit." Katia explained.
Kristina tensed and pointed the gun in her hand at Kalani who was reassuring Jax she was fine.
"Hold on!" Ash said moving in between the gun and Kalani putting himself in the line of fire.
"What? You want a Z in here to possibly gobble up Nathan, Devin and who knows who else?" Kristina said jerking her gun at Nathan and Devin.
"Hey!" Nathan and Devin protested.
"If you haven't noticed she's not a zombie yet." Ash said. Kristina pushed past Romeo who was beside Ash.
"Kristina!" Katia yelled. She had a feeling Kristina would kill their only chance at survival.
Kristina stalked over to Jax and Kalani. She stood above them with a look of suppressed anger, calmness, and worry on her face. Her gun hung limply in her hand.
Katia half ran half walked over and grabbed the gun. It went off accidentally startling everyone except for Kristina and Kalani who just shrugged. Katia picked it up off the floor and placed it on a table.
"Xan pick up Kalani and set her down on the couch." Kristina said as she stared at Jax. He was his regular self now.
"I can walk!" Kalani protested. She shakily got up to her feet and attempted to walk. She crashed to the ground.
"Can you?" Kristina asked with one eyebrow raised. Kalani grimaced as Xander picked her up off the floor. Little did Kristina know Kalani started to hate her at that precise moment.
"Rome go make some food. Gaby and Ash go and help." Kristina said.
"Why me?" Ash complained.
"Jax has....stuff to do." Kristina replied simply and left down the hallway to fetch her bag.
Gaby, Elizabeth and Katia walked over to Kalani. They sat down on the floor looking up at her. Xander had placed a shirt under her leg to prevent blood getting on the carpet.
"Is she always like that? So bossy, uptight, sarcastic, and mean?" Kalani asked.
"Who again?" Xander asked.
"The girl with the black hair." Kalani replied.
Gaby and Katia looked at Elizabeth. Kalani looked down at them and rolled her eyes.
"Not her! The white chick. You know the one that had a gun in her hand." Kalani said in exasperation.
"Well maybe if you hadn't been acting so independent." Xander said after a long silence. He went towards his room.
Kalani looked down at Gaby.
"What's his problem? When we were down at the base he was always the fun one." Kalani said.
"You like him then?" Gaby asked. Gaby was not so forthcoming with people, but Kalani seemed different.
"No! I like Jax. Oh yeah, and before you have any thoughts stay away from him." Kalani said simply.
"But isn't he your adoptive brother?" Katia asked.
"Yeah, but its not like he has my blood." Kalani replied.
"Figures." Elizabeth mumbled as Kristina came in with two long strips of white cloth and her bag.
"And the witch is here." Kalani grimaced.
Kristina came over oblivious to what Kalani had just said.
"Okay. Let's get you patched up." Kristina said.
"Kristina...um can I-" Elizabeth started. Kristina turned around and faced Elizabeth her back to Kalani.
"What is it?" Kristina asked.
Kalani gave Elizabeth an 'I'm going to kill you if you tell her anything' look. Elizabeth swallowed and hid her expression.
"Nothing." Elizabeth responded.
"Really? Wow." Kristina said and knelled down by Kalani's leg.
She took out a red vial from her bag that she had token from Camille's shop.
She poured it over Kalani's leg. Kalani winced at the pain. Kristina saw her expression and smirked.
"You'll be fine." Kristina said. Elizabeth, Katia, and Gaby had left to play with Nathan's old Wii.
Suddenly as Kristina wrapped a white cloth around Kalani's leg Kalani burst out.
"AHHHHHHHHH!" Kalani cried gripping the couch. Kristina knew real pain from fake pain. This was definitely fake. Kristina got salt out of her bag and poured a little in her hand. She sprinkled it on Kalani's cut and smirked.
The group came running in as Kalani now cried from real pain. Kristina quickly bandaged the rest and walked away from Kalani.
"She's really dramatic that one." Kristina said.
Everyone stared at Kalani to Kristina. Then, Romeo burst in.
"Anyone want pizza?" He asked.
