Chapter 33

"What's happening?" Jax asked. He still had morning drowsiness when he heard someone curse at the universe. He walked lazily over to Romeo. Romeo seemed intrigued and yet slightly drawn back. Jax finally became fully awake and stood by Romeo's side.
"You're lying. Kristina just said that-" Romeo was arguing.
"Who are you?" The boy asked. He was assessing Jax with his gaze. He seemed satisfied enough to respect Jax at least a little.
"I might want to ask the same to you. What is he doing here anyways, Romeo?" Jax said turning back to his friends. He ignored Kayden completely. Kayden just scoffed, rolled his eyes, and waited for the two.
"Kristina said he is Christopher, yet the man says he never met Kristina and his name is Kayden." Romeo explained.
"Hm....wasn't Chris Kristina's brother?" Xander asked who was standing behind Romeo.
"Shit." Romeo said jumping in surprise.
"Romeo, are you okay?" Jax asked. Romeo was always a good boy, a gentleman. Now, not so much.
"Sorry to interrupt your 'guy chat'," Kayden interrupted making air quotes,"but I need a place to stay. If you don't want me here then I'll-"
"Shit! The rude guy!" A scream cane from behind the guys. Elizabeth stood with her dark hair brushing her shoulders. Her dark eyes stared at Kayden with her hand over her heart. She got over her trauma and stalked up over to Romeo. "What is he doing here?" Elizabeth said with the disgust clear in her voice.
"Hm...it seems like everyone I meet here has something against me." Kayden said looking Elizabeth up and down with his eyes. He removed an alcohol bottle from his belt and drank from it. "Your name, gorgeous?"
"He's drunk!" Jax waved a hand at the bottle and looked helplessly at Romeo.
Elizabeth flushed at the complement, even though she had just been upset earlier. "Elizabeth, thank you."
"Hm...Elizabeth." Kayden repeated her name with relish. He seemed satisfied and pointed his gaze at Jax. He made a grunt sounding half amused and annoyed at the same time.
"I don't know what you want, but-" Xander stepped up.
Kayden barely recognized his appearance. "Oh, hello there 'all american boy'. I didn't notice you."
"My name is Xander. What are you doing here? You're not wanted." Xander exclaimed proudly.
"Not wanted? Hm....it seems to me that the pale little girl who hugged me earlier seemed to think differently." Kayden pointed out.
"You're her brother! How can you think like that!? You're sick." Xander looked at Kayden with disgust.
"Oh, please forgive the poor amnesiac. I can't believe what everyone tells me now can I?" Kayden looked at Xander with annoyance and disgust. A period of silence came until Kristina appeared behind the door.
"You're still here?" She asked. She pushed her way through. "Rome, why is he still here?" She looked up at Romeo. The front of her shirt was slightly damp and her eyes a little puffy and red.
"He's an amnesiac. We're giving him a place to stay. That is why he is here." Romeo said with finality in his voice. He looked at Kristina with a challenge gleaming in his eyes. Kristina stared at him for a moment, then her eyes moved to Kayden. He stood smiling in the doorway. Kalani moved into the room, she glaced at Kayden, and stared at him questioningly.
"He's staying." Jax answered her unspoken question.
"Seems like everyone we meet is." Kalani replied. Everyone stood in silence, until Kayden started to talk again.
"I might as well warn you, some Zs are after me." Kayden said casually. He sat on the counter top, as everyone yelled at Romeo for the bad decision he had just made.
"Guys, problem!" Elizabeth yelled over the chaos. She looked outside to see about thirty Zs surrounding the property sniffing the air.
"What is it?" Jax asked. He moved towards the door and upon seeing the Zs, he pulled the curtain, and dropped to the floor.
"Jax?" Romeo asked. He looked questioningly at the window.
"Zs about I would guess twenty maybe more." Jax said quickly. Romeo turned and scowled at Ethan.
"I thought this was a safe place!" He yelled in frustration.
"Its a halfway point. The safe area is miles from here. I told you this before!" Ethan defended himself. He threw his hands up and ran to go and get his small backpack.
"Everyone change, get a weapon, and meet me at the window in Elizabeth's room." Romeo ordered and then sprinted off. Elizabeth ran to her room to wake Katia, Devin, and Nathan, while Jax and Xander moved about cleaning up and getting their stuff.
Kalani ran off to go change and do her hair. Kristina wiped towards Kayden. He was grinning at the ceiling, probably thinking how great he is.
"What is wrong with you? Don't you know who's after you?" Kristina yelled at him.
"Look, lady. I told you I wasn't interested in talking with you. Also I'm not dumb, I know Ash is after me. He accused me of being his brother. Like someone as handsome me can be related to that trash." Kayden replied. Kristina wanted to punch him for being so stuck up, but she would have to do it later. She had to change and stuff. She ran to her room.
Kayden stared up at the ceiling. He didn't get what was wrong with the girl they called Kristina. Something in the back of his mind teased him. He wanted to remember, but he just couldn't. Oh well, I'll just have to be a completely different person. He started walking towards the only room in the house. He assumed that should be Elizabeth's room.
"We can't go there! Its abandoned!" Ethan was arguing.
"Everything's abandoned! It's an Apocalypse!" Kristina screamed back.
"Just go out the window!" Romeo yelled at Kristina. One foot was perched on the ledge and both hands were placed beside her foot. Kristina sighed, rolled her eyes, and flipped out the open window. Ethan and Romeo tossed her her bags, and everyone proceeded out. Katia was the last to come out. She landed on her butt, and picked herself up.
"Okay, where are we going?" She asked. Romeo looked stressed. He was fingering his belt loops on his belt.
"I don't know where we can go, but we got to run before the Zs sniff us out. I think they're getting faster." Romeo admitted.
"Or you're getting slower." Kristina mumbled.
Xander opened his mouth like he was about to speak, and everyone looked up at him hopefully. Finally, he just closed him mouth. He slumped his shoulders defeatedly. One Z came around the bend of the house, and squealed in delight at the sight of Kayden.
"Fuck." Kayden said aloud, he turned to run into the forest. A Jeep bursted out of the forest and crashed into Kayden. Kayden jumped into the air as the Jeep spun out of control. Kayden landed on the hood of the car, he jumped and grabbed the side mirror, the Jeep spun again and Kayden's whole body slammed into the Jeep. Kayden's limp body fell onto the grass. A moment of silence passed.
"Oh dear." The girl driving the Jeep exclaimed. She had fair brown hair tumbling in waves down her shoulders onto her back. She wore a yellow dress that was torn and splattered in mud. Time seemed to stop, even the Zs paused to look at the scene before them.
"Run." Devin whispered before Nathan and Devin sprinted towards the Jeep. Everyone came back to life, and the Zs started to scream. Elizabeth, Katia, and Ethan ran side by side following Nathan and Devin. Romeo stood stunned as Jax pushed him forward. Xander sprinted to the girl behind the wheel of the Jeep making motions with his hands. Kalani kicked at the Zs near her with her heeled boots, while Kristina ran over to the side of the Jeep to pick up Kayden. Xander grabbed the wheel as the girl moved into the seat next to him. Nathan, Devin, Ethan, Elizabeth, and Katia jumped into the trunk.
"HURRY UP!" Xander yelled as he revved the engine clearly enjoying himself.
Jax took Kayden from Kristina's arms and sat in the seat behind Xander. With only one seat left Romeo threw himself next to Jax.
"Fuck you, Romeo!" Kristina yelled. She looked wildly around for somewhere to sit.
"Just sit on the floor, idiot!" Xander yelled. The Zs ran at the Jeep and Xander began to drive running over one of the Zs to get out. Kristina jumped and grabbed the railing on the roof. She swung herself in and fell onto the floor. Romeo closed the door behind her with a smirk on his face.
"What, Rome?" Kristina said. Her jeans had a thin cut down her thigh. Little pinpricks of blood reddened the soft material.
"You said that dude was your brother, correct?" Romeo asked still smirking. Kristina was beginning to get embarrassed by her brother. She wished she hadn't said anything, and could return back to the closed up, emotionally, teen she had been.
"Yes." She sighed.
"Hm....well then. Do you crash and burn, then? Is it somehow a genetic trait? That would be bad if it was." Romeo laughed. He glanced at the limp Kayden in Jax's arms. He had dark brown hair. His hair looked black in contrast with his skin. He could see the similarities between him and Kristina, though there was not much similarities. Their attitudes and personalities were way different as well.
"Can you stop calling him my brother." Kristina said. Though it sounded more like a demand instead of a question.
"He is though, isn't he?" Romeo said surprised. He never had siblings, but he imagined that if he did he wouldn't act like how Kristina was acting now.
"He's an amnesiac. I don't want anything to do with him. He behaves the same, possibly worse than how he was before. He's not my brother anymore than Ash is." Kristina said rudely. She turned her back on Romeo. Romeo was about to say something comforting, but a voice cut through him.
"Didn't seem that way this morning." Kayden replied. He placed a hand over his eyes. He sat up in Jax's lap. Jax gave an annoyed grunt, but didn't intervene.
"This morning I thought you were Christopher Dotson. Now, you're Kayden." Kristina replied.
"Oh, yeah w-" Kayden started before he thumped back into Jax's arms.
"He's really cool, but annoying at the same time. Mostly annoying." Jax muttered. Kristina chuckled figuring that Jax hit Chri- Kayden.
