"I'm ready." I hiss.
"I just don't want you to-" Noah replies holding the handles on my wheel chair.
"I'm okay." I whisper laying a hand on his.
"I know. I know." Noah runs a hand through his hair and continuing to push me through the door. Jackson sits beside Amaryllis in her hospital bed my her head running his fingers over her unkept hair. I have gathered from my few visits that never venture farther than right outside the door where I watch Jackson sit beside her and it doesn't look like he's left.
"Here" I say and carry the small plastic cup I have over to him. "It's only coffee."
"Thank you." He replies nodding slightly and taking a sip out of the cup.
"Anything good?" I ask.
"Not yet." Jackson says. I roll up beside of Amaryllis and rest a hand over her pale one. "Their taking her to surgery tonight." He grins.
"She will get half her face back. They grew her a piece of her own skin." Jackson murmurs. "These people. They're awesome." I nod taking in Amaryllis's features. Half her face was a pinkish which I heard was good and the other side looked barely touched.
"Hey Amaryllis." I whisper even if everybody else can hear me. "I need you to wake up, okay? Cause if you leave me now it means that this is my fault and then I couldn't live with myself so would you mind? I know that you still have a life to live and everything's waiting on you. Sometimes they say that you can hear what's around you well- I hope you hear this cause I need you to wake up." Then I start talking so quietly only Jackson could hear and Noah wouldn't be able to catch it. "And Jackson been staring at you this whole time just since you can't see yourself." I smile.
Jackson raises an eyebrow. "Is that really what I seem like?" He asks.
"Yeah it's pretty pathetic too." I grin rolling my wheel chair out. "Tell me how the surgery goes." I call but I'm already out the door. I hear a faint agreement from Jackson. I get to my room and I wait for Noah to come up to me. "Help me up." I murmur but he's already helping me. I breath and haul my body onto the bed. "I can't walk." I breathe.
"I think you can." Noah shrugs.
"But I can't. My leg doesn't feel like my own. I'm getting feeling in it but it's more of a dead weight. I'm probably never going to get full function of it." I say.
"Just a few more days. I think you will get it." Noah smiles.
"What about a prosthetic leg?" I ask.
"Don't talk like that." Noah says warningly.
"But really." I say. "What if."
"What if what? You get your leg cut off? Is that supposed to change something?" Noah asks.
"I don't know." I shrug. I feel a weird tingling feeling in my foot and then a burning sensation. A gasp gets stuck in my throat and I can see panic in Noah's eyes. "It hurts. My leg." Tears spring to my eyes but surprise keeps them away. "Page a nurse!" I lay back on the bed a my face grimaces in pain. Sooner than average two doctors in dark blue scrubs race around me.
"Your leg is damaged internally. We can take you to surgery that will risk your life or replace it with a prosthetic." One of them says. I imagine jumping out of trains and greeting new initiates every year. Running after the dauntless as I go to choosing ceremonies for my kids. I can't do that with a fake leg.
"Don't take my leg." I say through gritted teeth.
"Harper!" Noah gasps surprised.
"Don't let them take my leg!" I screech.
"Get her prepped for surgery." The nurse agrees.
•••
I wake up from the anesthesia.
"I'm not dead." I note removing the oxygen mask from my face.
"Nope." Noah agrees. I look around and everybody but Amaryllis is sitting in my room.
"I can feel it." I whisper a smile twitching on my face. "You didn't let them take my leg?" I say swingle my head to Noah. I feared I could only feel the half of my leg.
"No I didn't." Noah shakes his head calmly. "Even if you almost died because of it."
"Thanks." I whisper. "How's Amaryllis?" I ask turning to Jackson.
"Just got out of surgery. They say she might wake up soon but right now she's under anesthesia so we might have to wait a while." Jackson shrugs trying to act casual but he's sitting on the edge of his seat tensed up.
"Maybe you should go wait for her to wake up." I whisper smiling so only he can hear me.
"Yeah. Probably." Jackson fidgets with his thumbs and stands up to leave. Once he's out the door I see that Bianca still has white gauze wrapped around her upper thigh and a crutch up against the wall beside her chair.
"They didn't think you were gonna wake up." Bianca says abruptly.
"Bianca!" Noah exclaims. My dad just looks a bit surprised.
"You think we were gonna keep it from her!" Bianca retorts. "You think she wouldn't find out! She is dumb."
"What?" I interrupt.
"They thought you were dying. You had close to no brain activity left. Why do you think everyone was sitting here waiting if they thought you'd be fine. Not much pulls Jackson from Amaryllis like that." Bianca says.
"I'm awake now." I shrug.
"They think-" Bianca starts but is cut off.
"Stop!" My dad yells.
"Tell me!" I cry out.
"They think it's a surge!" Bianca says before anybody interrupts her.
"What's a surge?" I stutter having the faintest idea what she means.
"Where they know your dying and you wake up and everybody thinks your fine. It's a rush of adrenaline then you start talking emotionally until you die." Bianca says less than a whisper. Noah buries his face in his hands and my dad rubs his temples.
"B-but I feel fine." I stutter. "I can feel my leg and uh- I'm fine." I stop. "I'm dying. Aren't I?" I ask.
"So they think." Noah mutters.
"I don't think she is." Jake says bringing up his presence and sitting straighter in his seat.
"What if though." Bianca says quietly.
"What if what?" Jake says loudly. "What are we supposed to do? Act like she's dying until she's dead and then there's nothing we can do?"
"How long." I whisper.
"What?" My dad asks.
"How long does a surge last?" I ask.
"A day or less most likely." My dad responds.
"Okay." I whisper. "I'm sorry."

Authors note!
In case you didn't fully understand, a surge is where somebody wakes up from a coma or something and everybody thinks they are fine but their body just sends a rush of energy through them before they start dying pretty much. They start talking all emotionally and philosophically then they start going down hill and die but sometimes it's not a surge😉 So cross your fingers that I'm in a good mood when I decide her fate😂 Jk. Maybe
