Amaryllis POV still
"I'm not going to sleep." I reply softly.
"Can you just try?" Jackson asks and I shake my head.
"You might just die again."
"What if we went back. Back to dauntless. Your home. You think it might help?" Jackson asks me.
"I don't know. Maybe? But I like it here though." I shrug nonchalantly.
"But if it helps it's worth it." Jackson says almost like we have hope, but we don't.
"What about Noah? We can't just leave him here alone." I say into the covers.
"You've got to think about yourself, Amaryllis. He'll be alright." Jackson tells me.
"Harper and Bianca left. Avary and Flacon are still back in dauntless. And dauntless is our home. We chose." Jackson quotes me.
I sit up and say. "You can't use that against me." I say warningly.
"You did." Jackson retorts but he is already apologizing in his eyes.
"That as different! You can't use that against me!"
"Shh. Calm down." Jackson says. "But you need to think of yourself."
"But I'm not myself anymore!" And then he just stops. "I'm not myself and won't be. Maybe dauntless can help me maybe not. But you and I both like it here and Noah might need us here. There are so many more reasons to stay here and not leave what's the point?"
"That you might get better." Jackson whispers. "This isn't just hurting you Amaryllis."
"Really? Cause all I can do is hurt. And I can't see anything else." I say.
"Go to sleep." Jackson whispers. "But think about it?"
"Whatever helps you sleep at night." I say but I don't try and sleep. I sit there staring at the little designs that covered the top.
Harper's POV
"Initiates are coming today!" Falcon screams through my door and I groan. Falcon's been picked for the other training position and we think we've decided, I train transfers, like my dad, and he would do the dauntless born.
"Come on Harper you don't want to be late." Avary knocks again.
"Fine fine I'm coming." I say and gradually get up. "What time is it?"
"7:04." Avary answers. So I get up and change into combat boots and a leather jacket with dark jeans. I brush my blond hair back into a tight ponytail. Then I step out into the living room where Avary wears a blood red tank top and black skinny jeans with studded boots.
"Ready?" Falcon asks.
"Yeah let's go." I say and we all start toward a run toward the net.
•••
"They should be here by now. You think the train was having troubles?" Avary asks but then we start to hear voices at the top. Inaudible as they've been every year.
"I think it'll be dauntless born." Falcon says.
"We've got a pretty bad bunch this year." I snort. "I think it'll be a transfer."
"Whatever." Falcon snorts and I glare at him till we see color slice the air where once nothing stood.
"Amity." I say. "Ha." I say to Falcon and go over to the net to help her off. I pull down the edge of the net and she rolls to the edge where she looks up scared. "Name?"
"Violet." She says breathless as I loan her a hand to hop off the net.
"First jumper- Violet!" I scream over the crowds which causes a loud thundering sound of feet and hands and yells. "Welcome to dauntless Violet." I say but barely get interrupted by the bungees on the net behind me. I turn around and there is two of the biggest trouble maker dauntless. It's not that they are bad kids but they seem to make trouble anywhere they lay eyes on. And the worst part was they were twins.
"Josh." I said going up to him.
"Harper." Josh's scoffs. Jacob stood behind us talking to somebody else. They weren't awfully tall or anything. Maybe just a few inches shorter than me.
"Get lost." I tease Josh and run my shoulder into him as I cross toward the net. I help two more amity, three candor, and two erudite off the net.
"Transfers with me. Dauntless- born with Falcon." I say over the initiates then I start to walk. "Don't fall behind." I demand and start the opposite way of Falcon. "This is the pit. You'll learn to love it eventually and it will become your home. At that is the chasm. One jump will end your life no question." So on we move and more and more things are introduced to the initiates.
"Here's your dorms." I say bluntly opening the door and letting the uneasy initiates walk in before I close it with a loud bang. I meet with Falcon at the intersecting hallways.
"Puny bunch we've got." Falcon agrees to my earlier statement.
"Mine look like scared mice about to be rated by the biggest of their species. We have plenty of rats in some of the rooms." I shrug.
"They did." Falcon says.
"Let's go meet with Avary and eat maybe?" I ask.
"Sure." Falcon nods.
