~Sam~
Lucifer's arm was slung protectively around me as we sat against the brick wall and stared into the distance, thinking everything over in a comfortable silence.
"Can I tell you something?" Lucifer eventually asked.
"Anything", I replied, subtly edging closer into his body.
"I never wanted to hurt you", Lucifer told me with a softness in his voice, "Deep down, I hated myself for what I was doing to you. It just took me a while to realise that. I've never allowed myself to lower to this standard but...I'm sorry".
I turned my head to look at him. He had a genuine apologetic look on his face.
"Are you feeling alright?" I humorously asked.
"Better than ever", Lucifer said surely, "I'm telling the truth, you know".
Lucifer glanced at me nervously, as if he was worried that I wouldn't believe him. I wrapped one arm around his waist and pulled him closer towards me. He relaxed and sunk into my body, sighing happily.
"I know", I replied soothingly.
Everything we were doing-the way we were snuggled into each other, the way we were making each other feel better, the way we always ended up kissing even when we didn't expect it-it just felt so right. So comfortably casual yet so breathtakingly new.
"Sam?" Lucifer asked softly, his head rested against my chest.
"Yeah?" I watched him expectantly.
"Are you...happy?"
I felt my throat tightened as I swallowed and my body suddenly tensed.
"W-What?" I stuttered, completely caught off guard.
"Are you happy?" Lucifer repeated, "Just generally in life".
"Uh, why do you ask?" I asked nervously.
"Just answer the question", Lucifer ordered gently.
"I guess so", I eventually said hesitantly.
"Then why don't I feel convinced?" Lucifer turned to me with a serious expression.
"Look, can we not talk about this?" I pleaded uncomfortably, "Honestly, Lucifer, what do you expect? I'm a hunter. Happiness isn't really a well-known emotion in our lives".
I stopped talking. Whenever I allowed myself mention how my life was never destined to end up happy, I always felt a strong sensation of disappointment and emptiness.
Lucifer sighed quietly, squeezing my body in a consoling grip and suddenly everything almost felt better again.
"I really should get back", I strained to sit up but Lucifer only groaned and pulled me back towards him.
"Do you have to go?" Lucifer whined.
"Dean will be pissed if I end up staying out all night again", I explained, giving him a sympathetic smile.
"Fine", Lucifer released me, his expression looking frighteningly like a moody child who had just gotten their favourite toy taken away from them.
We both stood up and stared at each other for a few seconds, not knowing which option was the appropriate way of saying goodbye. A hug would be too strange, a simple smile would be too little and a kiss...well, that seemed like the best decision.
I grazed my hand against Lucifer's before softly pulling him closer to me so that I could press my lips against his earnestly. He smiled against my mouth and wrapped his arms around me, his body automatically loosening calmly against mine.
We pulled back. Lucifer gave me one last look as if he was studying a painting before pressing his two fingers against my forehead and flashing me back to the house.
All of a sudden, I felt lonely without him there but I shook off the feeling and opened the front door. I was taken aback to see Charlie sprawled across the couch, engrossed in a random zombie show on the TV.
"Charlie?" I greeted her with a grin, "What are you doing here?"
"Dean...requested my help", Charlie replied unsurely, "Where have you been?"
"I just needed a walk", I lied convincingly, "I'm going stir crazy in here. I wanted some fresh air".
Charlie studied my expression for a few seconds before nodding and diverting her eyes back to the TV. I glanced at the gore shown on the screen as a zombie ripped out someone's flesh.
"Really?" I asked her, stifling a laugh.
"Hey!" Charlie glared at me defensively, "Don't make fun of The Walking Dead".
"Okay, I'm sorry", I held my hands in front of me in a mock surrender, "Happen to know where Dean is?"
"He's in his bedroom", Charlie replied in a flat tone, absentmindedly staring at the TV screen with fascination.
I began walking to Dean's bedroom door.
"-with Cas", Charlie added with a suggestive smirk.
That was my cue to not interrupt them. I nodded understandingly, returning the knowing look and we both shared a laugh.
"Just watch this episode with me", Charlie begged, "Just until Dean returns. Please!"
"Fine", I rolled my eyes humorously and fell down on the couch next to her.
