Zayn Maliks POV:
"Okay, you need to cut the bullshit right now." I looked up from my desk to see Lexi at my door. She had her arms crossed and leaned against the side of the door looking clearly pissed.
I leaned back against my chair not breaking any eye contact with her. Fuck she wore that dress again, the one that hugged her in the right places and now that she was pregnant it looked even better. The fact that just a simple glance in her direction already turned me on.
But I looked away picking up my pen and pretending to write nothing on a blank piece of paper. I could not let my feelings get in the way of business. I had to remind myself that within office hours Lexi was my business partner and the my co-leader in running this firm. I couldn't weaken myself and fall for stupid things like this.
"To what do I owe this lovely encounter?" I asked concentrating on the paper ahead.
"Why are there flowers on my desk?" She asked raising an eyebrow, her gaze boring holes into the centre of my head.
I had sent her flowers a week ago and they had finally arrived. I seriously thought that she'd be at least thankful that I have given her flowers to begin with. My egoistic attitude hasn't really been in her good books lately.
I dropped my pen and felt a smirk appear on my face. "Am I not allowed to give flowers to my wife?"
"If this is trying to get me to lov—"
"—It isn't." I cut her off before she could even finish. I did not want to ever have that word thrown at me at any time. It could break everything, including all the barriers that I've put up. But I didn't fail to notice the disappointed look on Lexi face.
But she quickly recovered, clearing her throat and putting on a brave face. "Then what is it?"
I motioned for her to sit down and waited till she sat in the chair across from my desk. "Since we are both managing partners of this firm I wanted to let you know that I wanted to call Jessica wislon —one of the best financial managers in this town."
She furrowed her eyebrows and opened her mouth to speak "...I don't know who she is."
This was the tricky part, Lexi could read me like an open book and she'd know my connection to Jessica sooner than a second. "She's...an old friend—"
"—you mean your ex" Lexi said, her golden brown eyes catching my gaze.
I opened my mouth to speak and actually had the thought of arguing back but what help did it have, she'd know sooner than later.
"It was high school..."
"I really don't give a shit." Lexi said rolling her eyes and fiddling with her ring.
My eyes caught onto that ring. I was still surprised she kept it because frankly I thought she'd take it off especially since I got her pregnant without her permission and all the other fights we seem to have all the time.
"Why do we even need her? Ever since we merged I've always been taking care of the financial aspects of this business. I just don't see why we need to hire a new financial assistance."
"well....thats the problem." I said standing up and shoving my hands into my pant pockets. "The businesses financial year is in a couple months....In less than 9 months —actually 7 months— and you won't be here." I said my eyes flickering down to her belly where I could already see a baby bump that seemed to be growing each day.
Lexi let out a loud breath, shaking her head. "that little pice of shit." she muttered.
I paused, frowning. "What?"
