The Joker was having the time of his life. He was finally receiving all of the attention that he deserved, even if he was lying. Then again, isn't that what villains did? Besides, it wasn't like he actually enjoyed the idea of him and Batman being together. That would just be uncharacteristic! Still, if pretending that he and Batman were a thing would keep him famous, then so be it. It didn't matter how long he would have to keep up the jig. Speaking of which, he had an interview with a TV show host that he had to get to.
"You're looking swell, Puddin!" Harley told Joker while adjusting his tie.
"Thanks Harley, I sure hope that I'll make a good impression," Joker replied, adding more lipstick to his lips.
Next up: The Prince of Crime, Joker! the TV show host announced in front of the crowd.
Joker strolled out to the stage with an enormous grin on his face. He waved to the people in the audience that were whistling and cheering for him. Now that he thought about it, that had never happened to him before. He was normally always booed and called off of the stage because of his reputation. It was a little nice to finally get some appreciation. Heck, even the TV show host was smiling at him. The Joker remembered the time that he once threatened to blow up the studio, but it seemed like everyone here had just forgotten about that. Did that mean the plan was working? Oh well, he had to answer the host's questions now.
"So, Mr. Joker, how are you doing today?" the host asked, leaning her arm on her desk.
"Great! I've never been better!" the Joker responded. He wasn't even sure if what he was saying was a lie or not.
"That's great! Now, lets talk about the matter that everyone's been talking about. Why are you only announcing your love with Batman now?" the host continued.
"I guess that I just felt like couldn't hold in my love any longer. I had to put my feelings out there!" the Joker replied.
"I see, and how long have the two of you been dating?" the host pressed on.
"Uh... 1940!" the Joker lied, sweating a little.
"Oh, I wonder why we haven't seen any of the signs earlier!" the host said before chuckling to herself.
Sweat continued to form around the Joker's forehead, which he had to dab away. He really should've thought of the origins of their relationship beforehand. Oh well, he'd have to do that back at the lair. In the meantime, he had to answer more of the questions that he really didn't have answers for. He sipped from the coffee mug that had been placed on the desk next to him, contemplating whether he should have brought a bomb with him just in case. The host continued.
"If you two have been dating so long, then why is Batman still denying that the two of you are an item?" she asked.
Crap, I should've just said 2008, the Joker thought to himself. He cleared his throat.
"I suppose that Batsy Boy is just scared that he'll be taken less seriously as a hero if he was dating a bad guy," Joker answered, shrugging a shoulder.
"Well I think that I can speak for everyone here that you haven't been acting like much of a bad guy the past few days," the host said, raising her eyebrow and smirking. There were a couple of people nodding in the audience.
"Love does bring out the best in people," the Joker responded.
.....
Batman watched the show that the Joker was appearing on, studying his answers with extreme intensity. He had also been asked to join in the interview, but he had declined the offer almost instantly. He still watched the show just to see what the Joker was up to. You know, in case he threatened to blow it up or something. So far, nothing like that seemed to be happening. Yet, he continued to watch the show. Mostly just so he could roll his eyes at all of the overly sappy answers that the Joker was giving. He probably would've fallen for it if he didn't know it was all a lie, and that made him a little annoyed. After a bit, his phone rang. He muted the TV so that he could hear what the other person was saying. That person happened to be Barbara Gordon.
"What's up Babs?" Batman answered, using his normal voice.
"WHY ON EARTH DID YOU THINK THAT DATING GOTHAM CITY'S GREATEST CRIMINAL WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA?!" Barbara asked so loudly that Bruce almost dropped his phone.
"I'm not dating the Joker! He's just lying about our relationship so that he can get some extra attention," Bruce replied, becoming almost sick of having to tell everyone the same thing.
"Really? Then why haven't you been telling more people about it? Why am I only hearing about this now?" Barbara asked, clearly angered.
The truth was that Batman hadn't really thought about what he'd do. He thought that punching Joker in the face in front of thousands of people would basically sell it. Instead, he looked like he was 'denying the truth.' That meant that he was going to have to prove to the public in some other sort of way. He was a heart-breaker after all, so this would have to be the most stunning break up ever! Yeah, that would show the Joker for lying to the world! Bruce just had to come up with a way to show everyone that they weren't dating, even the hardcore shippers. He was conceiving a brilliant plan when he suddenly remembered that he had just left Barbara hanging.
"I was actually going to make the official debunking more... official. I just haven't come up with a great way to do it yet," Bruce said.
"Again, why are you only telling me this now?" Barbara argued with her friend.
"Because I didn't know that I needed anyone's help until now," Bruce responded.
"In that case, we can come up with some ideas together. You and me, lets do this!" Barbara excitedly said across the phone line.
