----------------------------------

Skinny love (n.) - when two people love each other, but they're too scared to admit it.

Martijn was a person in your life that held a special place in your heart. You two knew each other for years, you met at a very young age and became inseparable since then, but you held a secret which could destroy your good relationship.

You were in love with your best friend.

When you were five, all of the children from your neighborhood teased you for holding hands all the time. He protected you at all costs, even though you were only kids.

When you were ten, you always played together and told your biggest secrets to each other, convinced the other one wouldn't tell a soul.

At the age of thirteen, you had your first kiss with him. It was accidental, but it made you feel something more for him, although you were convinced he didn't like you back, so you kept your mouth shut.

On your sixteenth birthday, your heart broke. Louis gave Martijn a challenge to kiss one of the girls you invited and they ended up getting together. Neither of them had no idea how you felt, so you ended up avoiding them.

Until Martijn came to talk to you and settled things straight. He still didn't know the truth though.

It was his twenty first birthday and you were celebrating at a big restaurant Martijn rented just for his friends, family members and girlfriend he had just started dating, Charelle. She was always so nice and so sweet so you couldn't hate her at all, except that you were sometimes jealous of her beauty and perfect relationship with the boy you've been in love with for years. You were seated on his left side while she was on his right, singing 'Happy Birthday' and clapping hands together with the rest of the people who celebrated the famous DJ's birthday. He blew the candles, then kissed the girl you envied on the cheek, then glanced at you and winked.

-Are you okay? - he asked afterwards.

-I'm fine. - you nodded with a smile. - I'm proud of you, you know?

He flashed you a grateful smile. - I know. I'm proud of you too. Thanks for staying with me and supporting me for all these years.

-Would want it any other way. - you took the plate with the cut out piece of cake from him and walked back to your seat. There weren't many people at the table, and those who were there were mostly talking to each other or on their phones. You saw Charelle sitting to seats away and smiling at you. You smiled back.

-Hi. - she spoke first and moved a bit closer so you could hear her better. The music was very loud. - Are you enjoying the party?

-Yeah, it's great. - you nodded. - What about you?

-I love it, although I'm a bit tired. Had to fly all the way from Australia, the jet lag is killing me.

-How's Martijn treating you? - you had to ask. - I hadn't seen him in two weeks, he was touring a lot so we didn't have the chance to talk.

She didn't seem surprised by the question at all. Nevertheless, she must've expected it. - He's been amazing, but we... called it off last night.

You were in utter shock. In some situations, somebody maybe would be happy to hear that his crush is finally single, but for you it was an unexpected new information. - What!? Why?

-He loves another. - she sadly spoke.

You thought you had heard wrong, Martijn was never the type of guy who would break a girl's heart and cheat. Whether it was family, friendships of romantic relationships, he was faithful to the core and always ready to sacrifice himself in the name of love

-Charelle, I'm so sorry, I will talk to him as soon as possible... - still, you were weirded out by her presence in that atmosphere. -How is it that you came to his birthday though? Aren't you angry?

-I mean, I'm kind of disappointed, but I noticed that he had been eyeing this girl for a while. I didn't want to say anything, but last night I told him I set him free. You know, love is a road that goes both ways and I'm not planning on destroying that for him.

I wonder who that girl is. She must be really, really special if he let Charelle go because of her. I wonder if he ever mentioned her to me. ,you thought.

By the end of the night, most people went back to their homes, including Charelle, and only his parents, sister and most closest friends, including you stayed. In the middle of your conversation with Menno, you noticed that Martijn was nowhere to be found, so you went searching for him. After looking in the bathroom, the kitchen and the party room, you remembered he could be in the garden, but he wasn't. When you exited the restaurant to see if he was there, you noticed a silhouette standing alone up on the terrace.

-Martijn? - you walked up to him. - What are you doing here all alone?

-I was just admiring the sky. It's so full of stars tonight. - he gazed at the black canvas filled with little sparkling diamonds.

-It is beautiful. - you agreed. - I heard about what happened with... Charelle.

-Oh, you did? - he seemed surprised. - Well, I couldn't keep it a secret anymore. I like this other girl. No, actually, I love her. - he turned so he was now facing you.

-Martijn, this doesn't sound like you. Who is she anyway?

He sighed deeply then smiled. - When I was five, I met this girl with (y/e/c) eyes and an adorable smile at a playground in my old neighborhood. I wanted to meet her so badly that I begged Papa to take me out more often so I could help her get on the swings or push her down the slide gently.

The story seemed oddly familiar.

-When we turned thirteen, I kissed her. I told her it was accidental, but god knows it was my plan, just so I could know if my feelings were real or not, since I couldn't sleep before, thinking about us. So I kissed her and I knew... she was the one.

Oh my...

-But I couldn't do it, I couldn't tell her. She was my best friend, she is my best friend and I don't know if she feels the same about me. - he finally admitted everything.

-So you kept it a secret all along? - even though you were shocked even more, you couldn't help but smile. - Without telling her?

-I feel so bad about it. We could've been happy.

-What's stopping us now? - even before he could reply, you smashed your lips onto his and kissed him passionately. - I love you, too, Martijn.

-I was hoping you would say that. - his eyes shone. He was truly happy.
