Brendon got used to Lucky quicker than I expected.
Within a week, they were inseparable.
It was adorable.
Everyone else in our classes thought so too. Brendon had become incredibly popular.
Everywhere we went, Lucky came too. During classes, he'd curl up at Brendon's feet under the desk. We were even allowed to take him to the cafeteria, which was pretty cool. A lot of people would share their food with him too.
And even though he would never admit it, I was starting to think Brendon was enjoying the attention.
After going for so long with only his family to talk to, Brendon seemed to like striking up conversations with people. Just as long as it wasn't about his blindness.
Lucky liked the attention too. He got a lot of pats and scratches.
They were always together. Brendon loved his dog. Lucky knew a lot of things, and could even find a bathroom if it came down to it.
He was really good and proved to be very helpful.
That was why it was so strange that he was barking and scratching at the front door at 2 in the morning.
I couldn't work out what he wanted, and there was no other noises.
I knocked my fist against the wall that seperated my room and Brendon's room. "Get your dog!"
There was no response. I banged at the wall again, eventually groaning and getting up to find him.
The bed was empty.
He was sitting at the front door, scratching at it and barked.
"Where's Brendon, Lucky?" I asked, grabbing his leash and opening the door.
He looked around.
I sighed softly as I came to a realisation. "I know where he is. Come on."
Brendon hadn't had a moment at the piano in almost a month. And yet, here he was at 2am, sobbing and smashing away at the keys.
Lucky started scratching his leg to get his attention. Eventually, he just sat beside him.
I'd seen Brendon cry pretty hard, but I think this was one of the worst times I'd ever seen him.
Lucky seemed really worried. He started to whimper.
"AWAY!" Brendon screamed at him, not stopping his song.
Lucky walked away, his tail between his legs.
"Brendon?' I asked nervously.
"Just leave me alone!"
I took a few steps back and comforted Lucky, who was still whimpering.
Lucky stayed close to me.
I hesitantly called his mother after a little while, not expecting an answer because it was 3 in the morning. But suprisingly, she answered right away.
"He's having a moment, isn't he?"
"Yeah..."
"I knew you'd call today, I just didn't know it would be this early..." She mumbled.
"Yeah, sorry about that."
"No, no, it's okay. I was already awake."
"What should I do?"
She sighed. "Dallon, honestly, there's nothing you can do for him today..." She took a nervous deep breath. "Just try and keep him out of the hospital..."
