Chapter 18

"Ready... Begin!"

Luigi huffed as he was knocked down again by Toadette.

"How... Are you so.. Strong..?" He panted.

"I'm not," Toadette replied. "You just don't know how to use your powers yet. You're battle is coming up soon, you need to know how to defend yourself."

"But I..." Luigi huffed. "I can't do it."

"Oh please, you'll be fine," Kaira rolled her eyes. "Unless you want me to train you, you better work diligently with Toadette."

"...okay."

Luigi wasn't exactly the fondest of Kaira, he honestly didn't get along with her well at all. He was planning on asking Daisy how she tolerated the girl, but that would wait till later.

"Come on, stand up already," Toadette said impatiently as she held out her hand. He grabbed ahold of it, and she pulled him up. "Ready?"

"Y-yeah-"

Her fan's twirled in her hands as she began to close in on him. He quickly thrust his hands out, lightning hitting right in front of the girl. She jumped back, dodging the attack and she rounded on him again. He pulled out his weapon- a small dagger that Rosalina had lent him. He deflected an attack from her and attempted to land an attack on her. She easily dodged, but smiled in approval.

"Good, you're learning. We'll stop with that for now. It's time for you to harness your power better."

"I don't really know how to control it," Luigi confessed. "It just kinda happens out of nowhere."

"I'm aware," Toadette nodded. "Alright, place your hands out..."

Daisy turned to Dixie, Kaira, and Saiko.

"You know, I've got a question," Daisy started. "Wh-"

"Another one?" Kaira muttered.

"-why are there more girls here than boys?" Daisy asked. "I know I haven't been here that long, but Luigi is practically the only boy I've seen around here... What's up with that..?"

"The power is more prominent in females," Dixie told her. "I don't know why, but-"

"It's because females were chosen!" Saiko chimed in. "We're superior, apparently!"

"We were picked just because," Kaira said simply. "The ability is seen more in females because of the birthmarks. It shows up more in females than males. I don't know a legitimate answer besides that."

"Oh," Daisy shrugged. "Do you think there is a legitimate answer?"

"Of course!" Saiko chirped. "There always is."

"Then what could it be...?"

"Tch-!"

They turned their attention back to Luigi and Toadette to see Toadette on the ground. Dixie gasped.

"I'm fine," Toadette grumbled as she picked herself up. "That's some strong lightening you have."

"Sorry," Luigi said. "I didn't mean to..."

"No worries," Toadette told him. "That's a good sign. Your magic is already powerful."

Daisy felt a slight hint of jealousy. How come she had to get a lame magic like nature while he had lightening? He was destructive from the start!

"Don't feel too bad," Saiko patted her shoulder. "Saiko started out the same as you! Saiko's magic is originally water, but Saiko learned to master it and now Saiko can use ice, too!"

"That's true," Dixie smiled. "I could barely hold up my human transformation when I first started! Now I always have it up!"

Daisy had forgotten that Dixie was originally a small monkey. She smiled gratefully.

"Yeah... I guess you guys are right."

Luigi collapsed onto his bed, exhausted. His cell mate was a large turtle like creature who he had no idea was.

"...I haven't had a roommate in forever," the creature grunted. "Who are you?"

"Luigi," He responded tiredly. "And you?"

"Bowser," He replied. "...first time training?"

"Is it that obvious?" Luigi questioned.

Bowser nodded.

"...we all went through it. There's nothing to be ashamed of," Bowser said. "What's your magic? Anything special?"

"I don't really know if you consider lightening special, but if you do, then I guess so."

"Well it's cool," Bowser shrugged. "I manipulate fire. It's a lot of fun to breathe flames."

"Wow..." Luigi stared. "Bowser, how long have you been here?"

"A long time," He replied. "I've been here six years without a roommate."

"Wow.... So there really is a lot of female inmates instead of male."

"Yeah. Way too many."

"R-Rosalina-san?"

A small girl with long blue hair and a purple dress stared at the taller woman with wide eyes. A dagger made of pearl was sheathed at her waist.

"Yes..?"

"U-um.. L-Luigi-sama... He's the brother of.."

"Yeah..." Rosalina sighed. "Unfortunately, yes he is."

"Will you be alright...?" The girl questioned, tilting her small head to the side.

"I'll be fine... I'll have to deal even if I don't want to..." Rosalina looked down. "Thank you for asking, Aquelia..."

"O-of course," Aquelia smiled. "Uh-!"

The girl hid behind Rosalina as Pauline passed by, Kaira and Saiko following behind. Aquelia shuddered in fear as she shivered.

"Don't worry Aquelia..." Rosalina stated. "I'll keep you safe."
