Chapter 2

"This is the food?" Daisy stared at the prison's food. It was pretty much just a loaf of bread and two questionable looking pieces of meat.

"Well... You don't have any money yet..." Rosalina explained, her tray housing ramen. "You can earn money... By winning in competitions.."

"Competitions..?" Daisy questioned.

"Yeah... They pit us against... Monsters they create.. If we win... You get money... If you lose... You die." Rosalina ended simply.

"W-what!?" Daisy screeched. "Wait, I don't have control over my powers yet!"

"Daisy Sarasaland," The emotionless warden strolled up, Rosalina looking away. "...I assume she explained the rules to you?" Kaira asked.

"Y-yes," Daisy stammered. "I don't have control yet, how am I supposed to-"

"...you'll figure it out. Even if you don't, your fight is tomorrow." Kaira stated simply. "Come with me. The chief wanted me to take you to meet someone."

"Okay.."

Daisy stood up, leaving Rosalina alone. Following Kaira nervously, Daisy watched as Kaira led her down the hall.

"...is it fun?" Daisy questioned, laughing slightly.

"...what?"

"Is it fun warding us around?"

"..."

"Don't you just enjoy your freedom? I hate you for being free! I want to go back! You're a warden- take me back!" Daisy cried.

"....haha...

hahahahhahahahahahhahah!"

Kaira laughed. It was such an abrupt change in her personality that Daisy was stunned.

"Me!? A warden? Haha, I wish! Freedom? I haven't seen that in years. I'm stuck here just as much as you are!" Kaira giggled, holding up her wrist. The metal bracelet was indeed on Kaira's wrist. "You're lucky you just started now! I've been here since I was five. This is practically my home."

"Wait- does that mean- you're one of us?" Daisy questioned.

"Mm-hmm." Kaira pushed the hair behind her right ear motioned for Daisy to come closer. Upon inspection, Daisy noticed a small axe on the back of her ear lobe.

"So... why do you... Why do you act like a warden?" Daisy questioned. "And why the axe?"

"Because I've been here as long as I can remember. I know this place like how I know my katanas. Chief Pauline wanted to take advantage of that, so here I am... Or more so, I can't leave- or else she'll punish me," Kaira explained simply. "Besides, I intimidate a lot of people-"

"No kidding," Daisy muttered.

"-but as for the axe as my birthmark, I really don't know," Kaira chirped. "It's not like we get to choose or anything!"

"That's true... Do you usually show this side of you to people?" Daisy questioned as they arrived at a cell door. "It seems very spontaneous..."

"Hmm... Maybe, maybe not! Oh, but I shouldn't keep you waiting any longer! Let me introduce you already." Kaira opened the cell door.

"Dixieeeeee! Are you here?" Kaira quickly looked around.

"Hmm..?"

A small monkey slowly turned around. She wore a pink cap and a pink outfit. When she saw who it was, she quickly transformed into a human with a pink dress and blonde hair. The image reminded her slightly of Peach, and Daisy felt her eyes tear up a bit.

"You know I don't care what you look like," Kaira rolled her eyes.

"I do," the girl countered.

"...anyway, Dixie, is Toadette here?" Kaira questioned.

"Mm-hmm! She's right here." The monkey responded, pointing to the smaller girl lounging on her bed. She had a pink hat and pink pigtails.

"Oh, good. We've got a newbie. Pauline wanted me to introduce you to the rest of the crew," Kaira explained. "This is Daisy. Daisy, this is Dixie, while the other is Toadette."

"Oh... Uh, nice to meet you," Daisy waved awkwardly.

"We're the other ones who help run this place," Toadette explained. "We're like Kaira, though. We don't have a choice."

"Yeah, but we work for Birdo instead of Pauline." Dixie cheered.

"Birdo...?"

"Birdo is the second in command around here," Kaira explained. "Pauline's first in charge. These two work under Birdo's command while I alone do Pauline's."

"Why do you do Pauline's alone..?" Daisy questioned.

"...that's not important." Kaira responded coldly, her personality change once again stunning Daisy.

"Let's not talk about that," Toadette redirected. "It's a sensitive subject. Hmm... So you're Daisy Sarasaland? Good luck on your fight tomorrow. I hope you win."

"Oh yeah!" Daisy totally forgot about that, and began panicking. "Please help me! I don't know how to use it, and... Please!"

"No worries, that's why Kaira brought you here!" Dixie grinned. "I assume someone already injured your birthmark?"

"Yeah..." Daisy scratched the back of her neck awkwardly. "Do you need to do it again..?"

"No, one time is all it takes," Toadette explained. "Alright. So hold out your hands.."

Daisy did as directed, staring at Toadette expectantly.

"Close your eyes, Daisy!" Dixie unexpectedly shouted.

"Now imagine that whatever your power is is seeping out of wherever you imagine it's contained. If it's liquid, it's spilling out of a cup. If it's purple, it's coming out of a container." Toadette instructed.

Slowly, vines began traveling out of her hands, slowly seeping out and onto the ground.

"Good..." Toadette smiled. "Now imagine that someone is coming to attack you. What are you going to do?"

Without even realizing it, Daisy's vines smacked Toadette roughly.

"Ahh! Are you okay?" Dixie questioned worriedly.

"Yeah.. Ow... Well, that works too," Toadette winced. "Daisy, open your eyes."

Daisy opened her eyes. When she saw the vines still coming from her hands, she squealed in delight.

"I did it without injuring someone!" Daisy cheered.

"...think again." Kaira stared at Toadette.

"Oh, I'm so sorry! Are you alright?" Daisy questioned.

"I'm fine, don't worry about it," Toadette responded. "You should be okay against whatever they put you against. It'll be an easier monster, considering that you're a newbie."

"Thank you.. Thank you very much!" Daisy cried.

"You're welcome... Now stay alive."
