“So are they the new Power Couple?”
Ryan asked me on the way back to our classroom.
“Much like the Gross Couple. The wall should be washed with detergent because that Yoongi tainted the wall. Poor wall indeed.”
“You are still critical about him, I see.”
“Is there any reason for me to be angelic towards him?” I asked Ryan who pursed his lips. He knew what happened three years back and he also knew that Min Yoongi and I are on real rotten terms.
“I wish you’d forgive him though,” Ryan said.
“What for?” I snapped back.
“You know, you came here hoping for a new beginning from the ashes, so holding the old grudges will only haunt your happiness more. You are a senior in high school. Back then we all were hormonal teenagers, Kristene. Even I made mistakes, but I was forgiven by Sia. I think, it is your chance now. Think about it, will you?”
I nodded in assent. I will think about it.
But I was convinced that I will never turn history back. Being reminded of history and time, I happened to look at my wrist watch.
“Geez, it is nearly 1.30 p.m. I gotta go for drama auditions Ryan. See you!”
I waved at him and ran to my class to collect my bag.
When I came to the birch, Jin was already there. I smiled as I walked towards him.
“So you really came then, Kristene. Wow!”
“Why? I do not back off when a random guy indirectly challenges me.”
“Am I random to you?”
“Yeah, you are. We only talked this morning.”
He gave a lopsided smile and ran his fingers through his hair.
Wow, he was a piece of art!
“Did you tell me something?” Jin asked me out of nowhere.
“Yeah, we’d better go to the pavilion. Do you have a copy of the play?”
“Yeah, I do. We can share because it is still the auditions.” He said in an air of superiority.
“Just for today we’ll share. Plus the copy is from the library which means even I could have borrowed it if I had skipped my period to go to the library like you.”
I didn't tell that Mrs. Watson was on leave and that I was free during that period. Never mind that.
“Hold the horses. Phew ... That was quite an explanation indeed. Let’s go.”
The pavilion overlooked the basketball court. Wednesday was not a basketball practice day so we could face the auditions with a clear mind. At least that was what all of us thought until the basketball coach approached Miss Diane. After a small conversation with him, our teacher turned to us.
“Guys and girls, attention please...” she paused for a moment until the group had calmed down.
“Mr. Luhan says that the Zonal Basketball Championship is happening next week and that the team needs to practise today. So we are benevolent, are we? Would you mind the random shouts from below?”
A few moments passed.
“None is raising objections, is that it?”
Everything was silent.
“Okay Mr. Luhan, we are good to go.”
“Thank you Miss Diane and children,” said he in a deep voice.
After he left, Miss Diane started auditioning the group. I was quite nervous. This was my first time auditioning for a play. I slowly crept to the end of the queue hoping to buy some time for myself. Jin was standing quite ahead in the queue, so I practically had no one to talk with here. Involuntarily, my eyes turned to the basketball court below.
The boys were so active like some big rabbits. They leapt from here to there with the ball and it was funny to watch. It was as if it was some weird leaping dance. I chuckled to myself. A sudden shout caught my attention.
“Yah Min Yoongi, shoot the ball! Why are you waiting?” It was Mr. Luhan who was yelling.
I could see a boy holding the ball up above his head, hesitating to shoot.
“Much of a Shooting Guard indeed. Come on boy, DO IT!”
With that Min Yoongi shot the ball into the ring and it made its perfect way down the ring.
“That’s mah boy,” the coach yelled back.
I could see his face lighten up from here. It was beautiful to watch, the way his eyes formed crescents and the way his gums showed when he smiles.
Baby Gummy Bear! I meant Evil Gummy Bear!!
My reverie was interrupted when Miss Diane called out my name to be present for the auditions.
I did my lines well, I thought so and Jin gave me a pat on my shoulder when I returned back to the group of students.
“Okay children, the results will be up on the notice board tomorrow. Further information about the rehearsals will also be noticed. Thanks for coming,” Miss Diane said.
We all mouthed a thank you to her.
Jin waved good bye to me and left to return the play to the library. I was left alone again.
I thought that Mandy had left too, but unfortunately she was present. I slung my bag on my shoulder and climbed down the stairs of the pavilion. As I descended Mandy shouted from behind.
“I think Miss Diane could find Othello easily. Good that we are staging a play where even our Chip Cookie can act!”
I could hear several girls laughing out loud. I turned my head down towards the grounds and started walking back.
“You finally decided to show your smeared face here then. Here, you have a present for your unwavering courage.”
As I turned to look what was happening, someone pushed me away from my way. I fell on the ground.
When I gained my senses I could see a Min Yoongi covered in bits of cupcake and food wrappers. Some chocolate mousse was smeared on his chest as well.
“God dammit! Min Yoongi!”
I heard Mandy yelling in fear. He got up and went to Mandy. She started to sloppily clean Min Yoongi with her handkerchief saying sorry over and over again and that she didn’t mean it.
He just smirked until she cleaned him for a couple of minutes. Was he enjoying that Mandy was cleaning him up?
Such a playboy he was!
