Chapter 8: Guilt

Peach ran up to Luigi embracing him in a hug. "Luigi we were so worried, we're sorry we couldn't get to you a few days ago", Peach said as she began crying. Toadsworth handed Peach some tissues and explain to Luigi what happened. "Mario was supposed to get you two days after you were kidnapped, but he was terribly injured". Luigi's eyes widen," I-Injured"! Toadsworth nodded," yes that explosion knock Mario extremely hard causing him to break some bones, we tried to send in a rescue party, but each one failed". Luigi stood in silence thinking about how to hurt his brother has been. "Luigi how did you escape", Peach asked wiping away her tears. "Bowser found out it was me so I ran, I first changed my clothes to run better and I managed to get away", Luigi said. "I'm so glad you're safe and in one piece", Peach said. Luigi quickly turned to Toadsworth trembling, "W-Where is Mario can I see him". Toadsworth nodded and he along with Peach walked with Luigi all the way to the clinic where Mario was.

Luigi walked into the room where Mario was kept and nearly broke down in tears. "Huh he wasn't like this before", Toadsworth gasped. Mario seemed to have multiple bruises on his body along with bandages and a lot of restraints. Upon looking around the room Luigi saw that it was partly trashed. "What happened", Toadsworth demanded. "Nots so long ago he broke out of his restraints and began thrashing about to find, huh Luigi!", Toad said. Luigi ran over to Mario's side. "Mario", Luigi said tears falling down his face. He gripped the side of the bed  Luigi's eyes widen and he saw Mario's eyes slowly open and narrow on Luigi. "Lu-Luigi.......". At that moment loud beeps began to rapidly fill the room. Luigi quickly tracked the sound to Mario's heart monitor, it looked like his heart rate was dangerously increasing. Luigi looked at Mario as his eyes rolled back and he began to twitch. "MARIO!", Luigi screamed. A few toads had to push Luigi back and out of the room so they could
Access the situation. Luigi stared at the door tears falling faster down his face. "Luigi, I-I'm sorry you had to see him like that", Toadsworth said. Luigi fell silent, he couldn't believe himself. He felt terrible that he hated his brother for not saving him when in reality, he was hurt. "I-I need to go home", Luigi Mutters out. "Oh, OK we understand, something like this takes time", Peach said. "If you'd like Toadsworth and I could escort you home", Peach Offered. "No no, it's fine, I really need time to myself", Luigi said rubbing his eyes. "Understood, Luigi if you're up to it, please meet me in the castle's study, I'd like to speak to you", Toadsworth said. Luigi nodded and turned towards the room Mario was in before leaving.

The stroll to Luigi's home seemed to take ages since he kept getting lost in his thoughts. A cloud seemed to form around him engulfing him in his dark thoughts. He felt more empty and he continued to walk. The pain seemed to emerg within every step making his body feel heavy. He felt Ugly, disgusted from what he became. He kept blaming himself for everything, Mario wouldn't have been hurt if he'd learn how to protect himself. Constantly taking the blame seemed to be the only right thing for him to do. Luigi sighed as he looked up into the stary sky embracing its beauty. Yet its beauty alone couldn't wash away the cloud of disgust. Luigi finally made it to his front door and opened it taking a few steps in before collapsing on his knees. Luigi became filled with so much sadness that he couldn't cry anymore, it just hurts. "I'm a monster...", Luigi said. Luigi remembered the deal he had made with Bowser, the dealing of guilt seemed to impale him through his chest. He couldn't do it to Mario, yet he was afraid to go against Bowser's wishes. Luigi took the last bit of his energy to walk to the bathroom to look at himself in the mirror. His face looked deprived of life, his skin pale and dark circles forming around his eyes. "You're not human you bastard", Luigi said he stared deeply within his eyes using them as a window to view his tainted soul. "Why are you like this, why...are you still alive", Luigi said. The constant crying and self-guilt gave him a very bad headache. Luigi held his head as he searched through the medicine cabinet for aspirin. Upon finding the bottle he poured two pills in his hand. Before he placed the pills in his mouth he examined the bottle reading it with his lifeless eyes..... Luigi...wanted the pain to go away. His body seemed to move on his own pouring more pills in his hand. "I want the pain, to go away", Luigi said. He slowly brought his hand closer to his mouth and closed his eyes.

Toadsworth sat in the study the stress of Luigi's return and Mario's injuries caused him to grow very tired. He sighed taking a sip of tea from the cup on his desk. Peach entered the study shocked seeing Toadsworth there. "Why are you here, shouldn't you be resting", She asked taking a seat across from him. "I know, I know, there's just so much work to be done that it keeping me from sleeping", he said. "Why are you still up princess", He asked. She sighed," Same reason". "Luigi's coming back is a mystery to me, something just felt off, pardon my intuition though", Toadsworth said. Peach seemed a tad confused, she really didn't understand how Luigi coming back was strange. Peach yawned and stood up," Please Toadsworth, don't stay up too long". "You have my word", Princess", He replied. She walked away leaving Toadsworth behind. "I must speak with Luigi, hopefully, he's up for our chat.
