"What are you guys doing sitting in the dark?" Zach asked when he and the rest of them came in that evening.
"Listening to the rain." Koda answered. Z plopped right next to her, kissing her cheek and putting his arm over her shoulders.
"Are you feeling any better?" he asked to her shrug-nod response.
"Some. It still stings though, no pun intended."
He laughed, snuggling into her. "It'll be okay babe, I got you."
She shed a smile and looked at him, her eyes still down-set with today's events. He leaned and kissed her gently as any comforting boyfriend would.
"So, did Jes-Jes take good care of you?" Mikey came up behind me and grabbed my shoulders. She looked dead at me and evenly smiled.
"Yeah. He was nice, except when he pushed me down the stairs."
Woah.
I jumped back a little, caught off guard.
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't play silly Jesse." she said. "When we were coming downstairs and you were right behind me and I tripped over that damned carpet. Remember?"
I was still at odds.
"You asked if I was okay? I told you my hips hurt from it and you made fun of how I walked."
Her demeanor had changed.
"You said, 'Oh no, what have we done?'"
It clicked.
"Oh yeah. That was really a hard fall though, I sure hope you're okay. Are you still walking funny?" I asked.
She shrugged. "I'm sure. I took that damn tumble right with my pelvis and hips. I'm sure to have bruises."
It was a lie. A cover-up for how hard we went. She didn't fall down the steps, only her and I knew that, but it was a good enough excuse for the walk and bruises I'm sure she had.
"Things will heal babe." Z held her hand. "Time heals all wounds."
Me and her locked eyes.
Maybe so, but not if they are freshly opened.
