Stamford canceled our fireworks this year
I was bummed
For me
This holiday culminates in the
Sparkly show in the sky
Today was spent running errands
And getting haircuts in Brooklyn
On the way home this evening
Something amazing started happening
Highway Fireworks
First on the
Belt Parkway
Then
Van Wyck
The Hutch
And finally I-95
Could see the ones in Manhattan
As well as all of the private around
In people's backyards
All while just driving in my car
I'd never seen anything like it before
I wasn't on the beach
In a chair
Eaten alive by mosquitoes
But in my car
With the a/c on
Driving as my mom spun for better views
From the passenger seat
I had music pumping into my ears
But the songs were chosen by me
Not by whoever was nearby
I could see them all
Even those in my peripheral vision
Some were loud
Not enough to make the earth shake
Others silent
Distant or close
Big or small
Weeping willow is my favorite
I saw that one too
Perhaps it's not how I thought
I'd spend this holiday special
But it was definitely unique
One of a kind
Something I'll never forget
Because this year
2018?
That's more than good enough
