"Come back!" Sam looked up from where she was pulling a power converter out of a broken Star Destroyer. A ship flew across the blue, cloudless Jakku sky. She looked toward the left, where she had heard the child's wail. Sam abandoned the power converter, climbed up her rope, and began to run across the sand. She was breathless by the time she saw the source. Mainly because it kept moving.

Unkar Plutt was dragging a girl about Sam's age across the sand. Rage filled her, until she could only see red. Sam began to run toward Unkar Plutt and the girl, pulling her blaster out of her belt. "Let her go," Sam screamed. Unkar Plutt looked up, and the girl looked at Sam. "Let her go!" Unkar Plutt just laughed, and plucked Sam off the ground. She let out a roar, and shot him. Unkar Plutt snarled, and let go of both Sam and the girl. Sam grabbed the girl's hand, and ran, pulling her behind her. Sam didn't slow down until they were miles away from Unkar Plutt. The girl sat down in the sand, panting for breath. "Are you okay," Sam asked roughly. The girl nodded.

"Yeah," she said. "I-I'm totally fine." Then she burst into tears. Sam knelt down beside her.

"Hey, hey. It's okay. We're far away from him. He can't hurt us." The girl continued to sob, her tears leaving trails in the dust on her face. Sam sighed, and moved so that she was in front of the girl, holding her shoulders. "Hey," Sam said again, looking the girl in the eye. "Everything's going to be okay." The girl just shook her head. "What's wrong?"

"M-my parents. They l-left me h-here."

"I know how that feels. My mother died just a year ago. I felt like she abandoned me." The girl looked at Sam, a question in her eyes. Sam smiled at her. "I learned to survive on my own. Want to know the first thing I learned?" The girl nodded. "Don't cry. Ever. Crying leads to dehydration, and dehydration leads to death." Sam gently wiped the tears out of the girl's eyes. "Drink," she ordered, holding out a canteen to the girl. She eagerly took it, and swallowed a few sips before handing it back to Sam.

"I'm Rey," the girl said.

"Sam." Sam stood up, then helped Rey up. "Come on. I'll take you to my home. It's an old AT-AT walker, left over from the Empire. I cleaned it up." Rey grinned.

"I'd love to see it," she said. Sam smiled. She felt something she had not felt since her parents died. Hope.

Fourteen years later

"Hey, Sam, I found some power converters!" Sam grinned as Rey's head popped around the corner.

"Great! I'll be right there." Sam hurried over to where Rey was staring at five power converters. Sam's grin grew even wider. "These are in perfect condition. Nice!" Sam walked over to the box. She placed her hands on the power converters, and pulled them out, one by one, using the Force to make sure they didn't break. Rey grinned.

"Those are worth at least a half portion each," she said. "I'll see if I can find some more." Don't stare, Sam thought to herself as Rey walked off. Ever since they were fourteen, Sam had thought Rey was hot. Like, really hot. Hotter than the summer solstice on Jakku.

Not only was she attracted to Rey's beauty, Sam loved how kind, funny, and loyal she was. Loved every part of her.

Sam had never voiced her feelings. She was too afraid that Rey would be scared if she did, or she wouldn't feel the same way, and it would ruin their relationship. Sam would rather go through anything in the world than lose Rey. Even suffering as her love went unrequited.

Hours later, after Rey and Sam had traded in the ship parts they had found for portions, they walked back home. They cooked diner together, Rey preparing the bread with their portions, while Sam cooked some of the vegetables she had found in the desert. They sat down together to eat the meal like they always did. They laughed and chattered with each other as they watched the sun go down. They goofed off, Rey putting on the old Rebellion pilot helmet they had, and Sam giggling as it hung on her head crooked because of Rey's hairstyle. And they were happy. Then the beeping started. Rey tossed her helmet off and grabbed her staff, running toward the beeping. Sam raced after her, pulling her blaster out of her belt and removing the safety.

A Teedo was putting a droid in a net. Rey raced down and started yelling at it in its language. Sam hurried over and stared at the teedo, pointing her blaster at it. Eventually, the teedo walked away, and Rey cut him free. "That's just Teedo," she told the droid. "Wants you for parts. He has no respect for anyone." Sam glanced at the droid.

"Your antenna's bent," she said, and fixed it quickly.

"Where do you come from?"

Classified, the droid beeped. Sam rose an eyebrow.

"Classified? Really?"

"Us, too," Rey piped up. "Big secret." Sam giggled at her sarcasm. "Niima Outpost is that way," Rey said, pointing. "Stay off Kalvin Ridge."

"Keep away from the Sinking Fields in the north," Sam added. "You'll drown in the sand." With that, the girls turned around and walked toward their home. The droid started to follow them, but Rey scowled at it. "Don't follow us. Town is that way."

Wait, the droid said. Can't I come with you? Rey and Sam turned around.

"No," Rey cried, at the same time as Sam said, "Of course!" They looked at each other. Sam gave Rey a pleading look.

"Please," she asked softly. "He has nowhere to go." Rey turned to look at the droid, then looked at Sam. Rey sighed, then motioned for the droid to come with her. Sam grinned.

"Come on," Rey said. Sam, Rey, and the droid started heading for the AT-AT. "In the morning, you go," Rey said coldly.

"Thank you."

Thank you.

"You're welcome."
