The next day was normal. Rey and Sam explored broken ships and gathered parts to sell at to Unkar Plutt. They took the droid, who was called BB8, with them everywhere. To their home, to the ships, and eventually to Niima Outpost. BB8 sighed unhappily.

Why isn't he here, he beeped forlornly. Sam smiled at him.

"Don't give up," she said. "He still might show up, whoever it is you're looking for. Classified."

"I know all about waiting," Rey added.

Who are you waiting for?

"For my family," Rey said. "They'll be back. One day." Rey looked at Sam, who looked at the ground. Sam knew the truth. Rey's parents had left her there for good. Sam had tried, multiple times, to get Rey to leave Jakku. They had made more than enough credits from selling some of their better ship parts to outsiders whose ships broke down. Still, Rey insisted that her parents were coming back for her. And Sam wasn't willing to leave Rey alone in the place they both despised so much.

Rey smiled at Sam sadly, then turned and walked to Unkar Plutt's stand. Sam and BB8 followed her silently. No one spoke as they made their way through the line of scavengers. Finally, they reached the front. Rey and Sam watched Unkar Plutt study the parts they had found.

"These five pieces are worth...let me see here.... One half portion." Unkar Plutt placed the half portion on the counter. Sam scowled at him.

"Last week, they were worth a half portion each." Unkar Plutt ignored Sam.

"What about the droid?"

"What about him," Rey asked.

"I'll pay for him," Unkar Plutt said. Sam narrowed her eyes. Unkar Plutt pulled several portions out of the bin under the counter. A collective gasp rose up from the line behind the girls. "Sixty portions." Rey started to take the food, but Sam touched her shoulder.

"Don't," she murmured. "It's not worth it." Sam looked up at Unkar Plutt. "Actually, the droid's not for sale," she said. Rey stared at Sam as she grabbed the half portion. Sam stared back at Rey. "Come on." Sam left the small stand, BB8 following close behind. After a bit, Rey followed. They hadn't made it past the drinking fountain for the happabores when they were attacked.

There were two of them. "We're taking the droid," the first said. Then he grabbed Sam and took her blaster. The other went for Rey. She beat her attacker with her staff, while Sam bit the first thug's hand, took her blaster back, and shot him in each of his arms. The whole thing was over in less than a minute.

"Are you okay," Sam asked BB8. The tiny droid caught sight of something, and freaked out.

That's my master's jacket! That man stole his jacket! Rey and Sam looked at a dark skinned man wearing a black jumpsuit, a leather jacket, and black boots.

"Who, him," Rey asked.

Yes! Rey caught the man's eye, and began to run at him, staff out. The man ran in the other direction. Rey ran off to cut him off, and Sam followed with BB8, blaster ready. Rey knocked the man down in the middle of the market.

"What's your hurry, thief," Rey snarled. The man stared up at her.

"What? Thief?" BB8 shocked him, and the man yelled with pain.

"The jacket," Sam said impatiently. "This droid says you stole it." The man glared at the girls.

"Look, I've had a pretty messed up day, so I would appreciate it if you'd stop accusing me--" The man yelled in pain as BB8 shocked him again. "Stop it!"
