I was laying on my side when I woke up the next morning. My eyes fluttered open to see sunlight shining through the window. I saw John fast asleep, his naked chest rising and falling as he breathed. I turned to see George asleep in the same position, his hair a mess and the sheet barely covering his naked body. Last night was incredible.
I smiled to myself and looked at the time.
8:27 am
I might as well get some more sleep. I laid on my back and closed my eyes, reminiscing of the night before.
...
Four months later
I was sitting in class staring at the calender on the wall. It was May 18th, 1960.
"Boo!" I felt someone shake me. I smiled.
"Hi Stu. How was your morning?"
He sighed and sat next to me. "Bloody awful. Got another gig tomorrow, didn't get much sleep last night and my head hurts an awful lot. It'll pass."
"Why don't you see a doctor? I mean if these headaches get worse?"
"I 'ave. They just give me pills, vitamins and such. I take em but they don't give." He sulked.
"We need a day off. Ever since the new arrangement, you all have been terribly busy." I whispered as the teacher spoke.
"I know. Were still 'avin the pary at yours right? I mean I gotta let loose."
I nodded. "Yeah. At six. John said hes got something to announce. Atleast you'll be playing here in Liverpool. Better than having to take another drive somewhere."
"Exactly. Hey um...i'm not really interested in today's lesson. Maybe ye can..."
I smiled and nodded. "I'll watch out for you."
"Thanks love." He kissed my cheek and laid his head down on the desk, closing his eyes.
Since the days and weeks passed, everything's been hectic. The band has been playing more shows, Stu's been having headache troubles, I've been busy with work and classes while George's decision to drop out of school has finally come to an end.
Me and Paul have become friends again but only to a certain point. He still watches when me and George are together talking or in a room alone. John still has no clue about anything that happened that day. But me and George have been doing pretty well keeping things to only a friend zone.
...
It was later that evening when we were all having drinks at mine and John's, when he popped the question.
"We should change our name from The Quarrymen."
"Why? I like it just fine." Paul said taking a sip of his drink.
"It's not a Rock N Roll name. I mean come on." John stood up. "Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, The Quarrymen!" He yelled. I laughed.
"Then birds go wild and scream their lungs out is that right?" George added.
"That's right love. Look i'm bein serious 'ere. We need a name change. Something catchy ye know. Something people will remember."
"Alright. Got any suggestions then?" Stu asked sitting back in his seat.
The phone rang as I got up off the couch.
"Get me a beer while you're up yeah? Thanks love." John winked. I picked up the phone and turned to him.
"Get it yourself you selfish prick."
He made a face and got up, smacking my bum as he passed me. I giggled.
"Hello?" The voice on the other end of the line repeated. I blushed realising he heard. I cleared my throat.
"Oh um, yes Hi."
"Is this Lucy Daniels?"
"Yes it is. Who is this?"
"Yes um, this is an editor and owner of a new upcoming music magazine from New York. We've been asking many big magazine companies and owners to make a list of their best writers and journalists. One of the lists were from Liverpool, England and well, your name was the top of the list."
I smiled to myself and felt John's arms wrap around my waist.
"Really? Wow um...I don't really know what to say."
"Well miss Daniels, we're very interested in recruiting you to our magazine. I called your old boss and he mentioned you were only seventeen at the time? So I assume you're twenty now. He mentioned how great your work was and sent in a few items...I gotta say, I'm really impressed."
"T..thank you! Mister..."
"Sumners. Miles Sumners."
"Mister Sumners. But um...i've got a job at the moment and..."
"Look, we don't launch the magazine until the winter of sixty two. But if we want to get somewhere, were going to need a perfect team and well, we'd love to have you aboard."
John kissed my neck and pressed against me. I tried to keep my giggling quiet. I pushed him away but he didn't move.
"Well um...I dunno. I mean this is where I live and..."
"I understand but...think about it alright? We'll send you the inforamation in the mail and then, you can give us an answer. Please miss Daniels, we'd love to have you."
I bit my lip and sighed."Alright. I definitly will think about it. D'you need my address?"
"No no we have it all. Please Lucy. Think about it."
"I will, and um, Thank you."
"No problem. Hope to speak with you soon."
"Goodbye sir."
Then all was silent. I sighed.
"What was that about?" John asked against my neck.
If I did take the job, that'd mean leaving Liverpool...leaving John. Leaving my friends. What if this band thing becomes bigger? He'd want me with him. I just can't leave. I know he'd be angry if I took the job. John would feel like i'm betraying him. Like i'm trying to leave him behind. I'd be in a different country. Back home. But this is my home now. This is where I belong...isn't it? I have a lot of time to think about it. What can happen in two or three years that will make me change my mind?
I shook my head. "Oh it was nothing. Um, just my boss from work about another assignment. That's all."
I turned to him and smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck as he kissed me softly.
