"Everyone," Owen shouted as he looked to all of his group members. "I want you to come meet somebody."
I cursed to myself as I watched dozens of unfamiliar eyes gaze over at me. Some of them were dark. Some of them were light. But none of them looked friendly. They all seemed rather angry with my presence.
They all stared at me for a moment before silently waltzing over to where I stood with Owen. My eyes moved to each of them as they all glared at me with some sort of anger. "This is Elizabeth."
I attempted to smile at them, but the smile was not returned. I was only greeted with frowns. My eyes drifted to the 'w's painted on their foreheads. I wanted to question what it stood for, but the hostility took my voice away.
"Why is she here?" one of the men grumbled as he looked me over.
"You bring me a play toy?" one of the other men purred as he slowly began walking over to me. I backed away slightly when he approached, but Owen held a hand out to stop him."It's in your best interest to back away," Owen growled as he stared him in the eyes. They stared each other down for a few moments before the other man backed away slowly. I had never experienced someone having such a claim on me. It was almost as if they were animals.
"Anyways," Owen said as he broke eye contact with the other man. "I saved her. She's here because I rescued her."
"Looks half dead," a female scoffed as she looked me over. I mean, she was right. A bullet and a crowbar to the head will do that to anybody. So I wasn't very shocked that I looked a little bit dead.
"So do you," one of the men in the back scoffed at her. She shot him a look of annoyance as he spoke."Whatever," Owen said. "I just wanted to make it clear that she's one of us now. So don't get bored and kill her."
My eyes widened as his words. They got bored and killed people here? This wasn't somewhere I really needed to be with the condition I was in. And I was one of them? I wasn't going to be here long enough to be one of anything. I was going to leave as soon as I could walk without flinching. I was leaving whether they wanted me to or not.
They all shrugged for a moment before moving away from us. I let out a sigh of relief as they did. The man who referred to me as a "play toy" was stopped by Owen, however.
"How much did we get?" Owen asked him in a hushed tone. I guess he assumed I couldn't hear him, but I did.
"Enough," the man answered with a nod of the head. "Dude with the bat got ahold of one. Couldn't save him."Owen slowly nodded for a moment before dismissing him. Once he did this, I understood that he was the leader of these people. After the man walked away, Owen turned to face me with a blank expression. I took this time to address the whole 'w' thing.
"So what's the W stand for?" I asked as I motioned to his forehead.
He smiled at me for a moment before touching his head. "Stands for Wolves. That's who we are."I raised my eyebrow at the name. I didn't want to find out why they called themselves that. After meeting all of his people, I was feeling a whole lot better. Better enough to leave and never come back, actually.
"I should be going," I said as I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. "You all don't need another mouth to feed and I need to find my people."
"Come on," Owen replied as he tried to stop me from turning around. I didn't appreciate him touching me, but I tried not to show it. "At least stay for the night. Eat something, take some supplies with you in the morning."
I wanted to reject his offer and leave right then. That's what I should have done. I should have left and never even thought about any of them again. Doing that would've saved me a lot of pain and memories. It would've saved me a lifetime of paranoia and bad dreams. But he saved my life. All of these people had saved me. After everything they had done, it was the least I could do. Plus I was very hungry and tired despite being near death for a while. Sleeping in a bed and enjoying a warm meal was what I needed. I thought he was just being kind. I never thought his intentions were so terrible.
"Okay," I replied with a simple nod. "But I'm leaving first thing in the morning."
Owen smiled a sinister smile at me. At the time, I didn't know what terrible things were going through his head.
I wish I had known.
