And the day is finally here. Graduation.
I see Abby in her red robe kissing Maverick near the locker. I see my parents' cherry smiles holding a bouquet of daffodils for me. I see Mr. McKenedy fluffing up his hair and straightening his tie before he starts his commencement speech.
The music in the hall is already playing and that was our queue to enter the fancied-up hall. Elegant music, cool-environment, blue chairs, a stage filled with flora and yellow lights bringing the atmosphere to life.
This was it.
As Mr. McKenedy started to give his speech, the crowd stays quiet. Everything seems so perfect, especially since Caivanial was seated far away from me. The speech was long, with words meant to motivate students instead only acted like a sleeping pill.
That's when I notice the curtains backstage were moving and from the side appeared Damien. Shit! Why was he here? Wearing a black suit and his hair gelled back, his eyes targets mine.
"Hey, isn't that Damien...is it?" Abby asks me. "Yeah..." I become timid. "What's he doing here?" she asks me. "I don't know." I try to repress the thought of my answer.
"He's the chief guest..." Maverick says and my mind collapses. "I think I need to go to the bathroom..." I say. "What?! No. They're already starting to give out our diplomas..." Abby tells me. "Right..." I say in defeat.
This was not good. Damien's stare is at me. His gaze is terrifying that the hairs on my neck were standing high. Was he a demon who wanted to kill me? But he was a vampire... like what Caivanial said.
"Now...I'd like to invite Mr. Damien Wivler to give out the diplomas..."
It started. He stands up goes to the front of the stage. I was in the first row, the seventh person. As the line become shorter, my legs couldn't bare the weight of my body anymore. I was trembling.
"Alexandra Jendrew Kain" Mr. McKenedy announces proudly as I step on to stage. I focus hard on walking towards him without tripping. Eventhough the heels were short, my legs were not in sync. "Congratulations..." he says with a smile. "Thank you." I tell him without eye contact. He hands me my diploma and bends down nearer.
"Meet me at the back of the school, the door towards the football field." he whispers. "What if I don't?" I ask him as I shake his hand. "Then I'll meet you at your." he says.
My glare is as vivid as his, that I nod before I go down.
What was I going to do? I didn't want to meet him alone.
And I certainly wasn't going to let him in with my parents at home. I return back to my seat and watch as the other students get their diplomas. When Caivanial goes up, neither of them smile at each other. They're faces were equally tense and their grip seemed solid, too solid. After everyone got their diplomas, we throw our hats up and scattered off to our parents. "Congratulations mi amor!" my mom screams and hugs me tightly.
"Congrats kiddo, you too Abigail." "Yes, you too Abby." mom says and finally lets go off me to give Abby a hug.
"Thank you Mr. Lawrence and Ms. Tina." she says shyly. "You're parents are still overseas?" mom asks. "Yeah. I'm supposed to get a video call from them tonight, so I'm crossing my fingers..." she's eager.
Soon, Mr. Wayne comes in our direction then, "Ms. Zachariah, Ms. Kain. I want to specially congratulate the both of you. You two were naughty but still great students. Hope you achieve high in all your endeavours." he says with a bright smile. Abby thanks him but my concentration focuses onto Damien, who is heading off the stage.
