Ed
“Where are you?” I asked as soon as she picked up. Hoping the service wouldn’t cut out.
“Well, hello to you.” She said. She sounded happier. As if our squabble had never even happened. I silently thanked God for that. She asks, “Why does it matter?”
“I just need to know.”
“Why?”
“Nina!”
“Tell me why!”
“You’re stubborn.”
“Edward Christopher!” she teased. “Tell me why you want to know where I am located.”
“All right. I’m coming to see you.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. I have a week of nothing planned and I need to see you.”
“Oh, my God! Wow. Awesome. That’s great.” She rambled, a smile relevant in her voice. “I’m at home.”
“It’s your choice… Do you want to meet me at my flat or I take a train to see you?”
“Wow, um-“
“Or I’ll fly to Edinburgh and we’ll ride the train together.”
“That sounds plausible.” She sounded weary. Finally, Nina said, “I don’t have any money for a two way train ticket, Ed.”
“Nina, you have to be kidding me! Obviously I’m going to pay for my wonderful girlfriend!”
It was weird to say. I guess it was to show her I was serious this time.
Nina’s voice was giddy as she spoke, “Okay. Yeah. That’s so amazing.”
“Pack for a week of adventure, babe.”
“I’m going to hold back from swooning at the fact you called me babe…” Nina joked. “You want me to spend a week with you?”
“Yes.” I said, blatantly. Swinging my bag as I walked through the airport. “Yes. Yes. Yes. I want to see you as much as I can.”
“Wow, cool.”
“My flight leaves in an hour-“
“An hour? You call me an hour before your flight leaves?” she was laughing. I could see her now. Sitting up in her bedroom, occupying the space with giggles and nervous, fiddling hands, as she paced around. Her hair pulled up and sweats on. The way I loved seeing her.
Or maybe she was all ready to go out. Makeup done and perfect clothes on to signify she was going to have fun.
Either way, the picture was perfect. “Ed, I thought you asked me what I preferred. How do you already have your ticket if it was going to be my choice?”
“Uh, well,” I stumbled with my words. “I could always change up my flight to whatever you prefer.”
“Oh, I see.”
“I already have a ticket for Edinburgh… If you want to see me.”
“An hour, huh?”
I chuckled as I stood in line for security. My hood pulled up over my head to hide my face. “Yes. An hour. I should get in around three.”
“In the afternoon?”
“No, the morning.”
“The morning.” She repeated.
