“Sorry as in your sorry I didn’t call, too, and Ed’s a fucking jerk, or I’m sorry I didn’t call you sorry?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” she replies. “Maybe both.”

“Well, this is the moment where I break out in song and beg you to forgive me.” I state. It was the first thing that came to mind.

I can hear the smile in her voice as she says, “You’re going to sing to me?”

I clear my throat jokingly and Taylor smiles at me, eyebrows up. I try to keep myself from laughing as I sung rather loudly into the phone, “I just called to say I love you. I just called to say how much I care.

“Oh, no.” she says, laughing. “Stevie Wonder.”

I whisper, “And I mean it from the bottom of my heart.”

“Ed, I don’t care that you didn’t call.”

Taylor stares at me the entire time and I walk to the bathroom and shut the door behind me. Taking a seat on the closed toilet seat. “What do you mean you don’t care?”

“I just figured that after what I told you, that you wouldn’t like me anymore.” She tells me, voice flat. “I understand, though. That’s why I didn’t call either.”

“Nina, that isn’t why I didn’t call…”

She continued, stuck in her own head, “After your parents, you never made the effort to come see me in January and you started picking fights with me. I assumed that was your way of pushing me away.”

“Nina, no.”

“And that’s fine, okay?”

“Nina, will you listen to me.” I ask and she stays silent. I sigh. “That isn’t why I didn’t call. I just – I don’t know why. We’ve been through this before.” I laugh. “Ha, you know. Where we didn’t talk.”

“And you show up out of the blue.” She states. She was eating something. Chomping away. She was right.

I stand up and turn on the sink. Swish my hand underneath and run my fingers through my hair. I ask, “What are you doing anyway?”

“Packing.”

“For what?” I asked.

“Jake wanted me to come down and record a few things.” Nina says. Her voice was distracted. She was busy. “I would have called, but you wouldn’t have answered and there was no point in leaving a voicemail.”

“I never do listen to my voicemails.”

“I knew that too.” Nina stated, with a kind of laugh. Taking another bite of whatever she was eating.

“That’s pretty cool about Jake, though. He’s a pretty chill guy.”

“Yeah. I’m pretty fucking excited about it. I might move closer to him. We’ve both been looking for places for me to live.” She adds.

“Wow. Really?”

She snorts, “Don’t sound too enthused, boyfriend of mine. You’re too excited. I can literally feel your excitement.”

I laughed.

Relieved she called me her boyfriend.

She says, “But yeah. It would be easier to work with him. The late night phone calls where I sing to him over the phone is getting to be too much.”
