Alice
He was shaking where he stood as soon as the words fell from my lips. It was relevant how Ed took the news, which was rather harsh. He shut his eyes and then his legs buckled and he fell to the ground.
I shrieked without meaning to and swooped down to him. I kneeled next to his fainted body and pressed my palm against his feverish forehead. I moved to sit with my legs crossed. With all my strength, I tugged on his shirt and made sure his head was off the floor.
With his head rested in my lap, Ed opened his eyes just a bit. He smiled delicately, “Maybe I’m a little too drunk.”
I laughed. Trying to wave away the regret of telling him. I ask, “Are you okay?”
“It’s my kid.” He speaks with his words smeared, and his eyes closed. He spoke in a light whisper, very faintly, as if he was saying it to himself. “I have a kid. Is this real?”
“If you want it to be.”
“I don’t think I can stand up.” He mumbles. “My stomach is rocking already.”
I pat his shoulder lightly. My head started to ache, a slight pain in my ears, and I pictured what could be of the future. I wouldn’t leave Oliver, I couldn’t, and especially not for Ed.
“Alice,” Ed says, cutting off my plan. “I should leave.”
“It’s too late to go anywhere.” I say and instantly slap myself in my head. “The rain is falling too hard. You can sleep on the couch.”
Gently, I moved his head off of me and stood up. With one hand, he shielded his eyes from the light given off from the lamp. “Where are you going?”
I kicked his side barely and said, “Get up, Ed.”
“I don’t think I can.”
“You have to.”
I held out my hand for him to grab. It was like he was a child, a drunken idiot who only could comprehend things like one. He reached up and locked hands with me. The spark instantly setting a fire in my arm that spreads throughout my entire body. I shutter and shake my head to rid any emotion away, my eyes falling on my engagement ring.
Without much help from his side, I help Ed off the ground. “I have a son.” He says, stopping to smile at me before he stumbles over to the couch. He shuts his eyes to quit the feeling that the room was spinning. “I have a son. Whoa, can I see a picture?”
“We need to make you some tea first. Get you sobered up, so you can leave.”
He opened his eyes into mine. He says, “I thought you just said I couldn’t go anywhere tonight because of the rain.”
I bit my lip and crossed my arms over my chest. “I changed my mind.” I utter, spinning on my heel and walking towards the kitchen. My fingers gliding over the curtains to the bay window in the living room. “And it seems like the rain is lightening up.”
I flipped the switch for the kitchen up and the lights flickered on. I head straight to the kettle that’s still warm on the stove. I grab another two mugs, even though a full glass sat untouched on the coffee table in the other room, and filled them both. I moved to grab milk from the fridge and stopped when I heard him muttering under his breathe.
“What is it you’re saying?” I asked him.
He was still leaning against the back of the couch, eyes shut, when I peered around the corner. “If I move, I’ll fall.”
“What?”
“I feel sick.”
“You’re fine.”
