Chapter 28: Midnight Sneaker

When David arrived home, he was in such high spirits that he even hummed a tune.

His father Feng was sitting in the living room, talking over the phone with his wife in China. His voice was soft, but it was very aggressive, and kept hissing at the lady at the other end of the line.

David ignored this and even hummed much louder, walking towards his room.

Feng suddenly noticed him and abruptly cut the phone call.

David had his hands on the back of his head, with a carefree gait that made him look like someone who has not a single problem.

Why is this bastard so happy?

Feng Zhou couldn't help feeling irritated seeing this young man. He looked like the embodiment of a decadent youth wasting his life away whistling and lazing off.

What irks him more is the fact that David certainly had the resources to make his life more productive, enroll in a nicer school, attend business seminars, and all those prestigious workshops. But the damned kid just doesn't do even a single thing.

"Zhou Lihong!"

David turned around innocently, with innocent eyes and pouty lips. He still had his hands behind his head. Upon seeing his father's dark face, however, he knew already what was coming, especially after being called his full name.

"Come over here."

Oh, hell no. Not this shit again...

Nevertheless, he obeyed and sat crosslegged in front of his father. "What do you wanna tell me this time?"

"What are you learning in school?"

Feng's question came out of nowhere. It disarmed David. Instantly, his brain searched for answers. His brain leafed through the catalogs of possible answers in the cabinets of his mind.

"Politics and governance and... writing... basketball... friendship." He uttered these random words like a Neanderthal.

Feng's face distorted in protest. "See?! You're not learning anything in school at all! That's the problem with government-funded schools, the teachers are shit, the system is shit, and what they're shoving down the students' throats are just shit!"

David's ears suddenly felt numb. He furrowed his brows. "What do you want me to do?! Haven't we talked about this, ah?!"

"No, we haven't, Zhou Lihong! As long as you're enrolled in that school, this conversation of ours won't be over!" Feng cursed under his breath and bit his fist. "I shouldn't have believed you when you said you enrolled yourself in a private school. I should've enrolled you myself."

"See? That's your problem. You're not hands on with me so you're finding yourself in situations like these. Heck, even if my school isn't the best out there, it's still decent, and you know what? The hardships I'm experiencing there are valuable."

David crossed his arms and leaned on the leather couch. "If it taught me one thing, it's the fact that I shouldn't rely on our teachers too much. It taught me how to rely on myself when studying and finding the right resources in the library," David said proudly.

He added, "I'd rather study in a poor-ass school with real people and real experiences than study in an air-conditioned private school without the hardships. The teachers there in your prestigious schools are spoon-feeders, and they won't let the students experience hardships." He leaned closer to his father and almost whispered mockingly, "Hardships are the things that mold a person."
