Chapter 55: Make-believe Birthday
"What?!" A girl with round eyeglasses exclaimed.
Olivia was seated beside her, sheepish. She just told her that she wasn't sure whether David could come to her birthday dinner or not. They're both occupying seats in a table at the end of the corner of a restaurant called Lico J's.
"Why aren't you sure, ha?! What if he doesn't come? I mean, we've been sitting here for about an hour already, with no traces of anyone that you invited! Sis, my breasts are starting to fossilize!"
Olivia rolled her eyes at her. "Don't exaggerate, girl! It's only been two minutes since we arrived here!"
The girl banged her hands on the table and put her face directly in front of Olivia's. "My point is, why didn't you make sure that David would come here?!"
"Hey, both of us want them to come here, okay? For our book. But that person was a jerk! He just walked away from me when I invited him." She stopped and rubbed her chin in deep thought. "...Although he raised his hand while he was walking away." Olivia then looked at her lap. "If that was an affirmation or a dismissal, I'm not sure."
Olivia's Book Club mate sighed. "What are we gonna do if they don't come here, huh? We're just gonna ferment here waiting for them!"
"Phoebe, don't worry about it too much! I have a feeling in my gut that they'll come."
Olivia smiled, then assured Phoebe by wrapping her arm around the bespectacled girl's shoulder. "I know they'll come. And... even if they don't, we're still in this together, aren't we, baekhosweatismyholywater?"
When Phoebe heard Olivia call her by her username, she smiled lightly and looked sideways at her co-writer. "If there's still no traces of them after an hour, I'll freaking go home and watch K-drama!"
"Honestly, same. But I believe we won't waste our time here, girl. I just know it, they'll—”
Olivia was stopped short mid-sentence when David the birthday attendee finally appeared by the restaurant doorway.
Phoebe saw him and started blushing. Olivia elbowed her to behave herself and act normal. We're not writers, we're not writers, Olivia kept on repeating in her head. It's my birthday today.
Olivia smiled too brightly, stood up, then approached David. "Welcome to my birthday!" She joyously exclaimed.
David sat facing the two girls. A confused look painted itself across his face. "Why are there only the three of us? I expected more people."
"Um..." Olivia scanned her surroundings nervously. "I'm sure they'll arrive here soon."
David smirked. "Including Celeste?"
"Celeste just called, uh... She said she won't make it."
David raised his brow. "Shame. I expected you two would be best friends after this."
Olivia laughed nervously. "Oh, I'm sure we would be at some other time." Like never.
David suddenly realized the bespectacled girl ogling at him.
Olivia noticed this too and secretly elbowed Phoebe beneath the table. She turned to David. "Oh, this is Phoebe, a writ—I mean, a student from another section. We're both members of the Book Club."
Phoebe smiled more warmly then shook hands with David. "Glad to finally meet you. You're getting more popular at school."
David ran a hand on his hair. "You mean that book?"
