Chapter 35: The Return
When the dark sky cracked into light, Eric and David were already awake. But none of them moved, thinking that the other one was still asleep.
The thing is, they're bundled together in a tight embrace, and both thinking that maybe if they moved one bit, the other one would wake up and break free from that cozy cocoon that was perpetuated all night.
They just didn't know that both of them were already awake.
Eric was so comfortable in that position, facing David so close that he could feel his warm breath on his face. David's arms were around him, and his firm chest was close to his. Maybe it's his hazy mind, but he didn't want to leave from that cocoon.
David, on the other hand, enjoyed embracing Eric, which he thought was still sleeping. His hands on Eric's back were like protective enclosure that would safeguard this boy from harm.
David opened his eyes slightly and gazed at Eric who seemed to be sleeping soundly. He was breathing steadily, and his sleeping, angelic face only made David want to cup it in his hands and caress it gently.
When the door banged open, both of their heads immediately got glued on the doorway.
The slender, ladylike silhouette on the doorway filled both of the boys' heads with dread. And though the figure looked glorious against the fingers of sunlight pouring forth from the doorway, in their minds the figure seemed like a harbinger of death.
They still had their arms locked on each other's bodies, and when the lady's shocked face emerged from the silhouette, the two boys abruptly sat up, looked at each other as if saying, "You're awake?!", and broke free from each other's embrace.
"Sir David Zhou?!" Marilyn's voice was full of astonishment.
"You know him?" Eric asked, getting up from the mat.
"He's the son of my boss, Feng Zhou, yes." Marilyn approached the mat and sat on the couch in front of it. Her confused gaze shot back-and-forth at Eric and David.
"If I'd known you're staying here, I would've called your dad."
David shot a confused gaze at Eric, before nudging him and asking, "Who's this woman?"
Eric leered at him. "She's my mom," he replied quietly and firmly.
David had a defeated expression on his face. He palmed his face as if saying, "What a small fucking world."
"Eric, why is he here? Do you know David?"
"He's a classmate, Ma."
"A best friend," David added.
Marilyn then looked again at David with a concerned face. "Your father has been very, very worried about you, you know that?"
David looked uneasily at his palm and gritted his teeth. The only thing he worried about is the family business.
"You should come home already, David. I'll call your father soon."
David's mind wanted to protest. But he didn't dare do this especially in front of Eric, and especially since this cleaner of theirs is the mother of the boy he cared most! What a small world indeed!
So he just gritted his teeth, sighed, and let out a whimper of defeat.
Marilyn stood up from the couch and turned towards Eric. She pulled Eric to the kitchen.
Eric didn't have the face to look at his mother with her arms akimbo, so he stared at the kitchen floor guiltily.
When Marilyn spoke, her voice was emphatic but it was down low as not to be heard by David.
