"Funny, both of us are seating side-by-side," Eric said dryly. He pretended not to look happy now that David's with him. It might have helped that he still couldn't get over the fact that he's probably gonna have the worst ride of his life at the back of the bus.
"Why, of course, destiny brought us together!"
"Just so you know, there's an 80 percent chance of me throwing up during the trip."
David's face lost color. "Oh shit, I should've—"
"What? What should you have done?"
"Nothing, er, I mean I should've given you a medicine earlier, but now that you said it—" David fumbled in one of his travel bags and got out a medicine tablet for dizziness. He took one out of its foil pocket and put it in Eric's hand. "—here, take this."
Eric took it. "Thanks. But really, what were you supposed to say earlier," Eric said, squinting. "You know I wasn't born yesterday, right?"
David sweated hard.
Eric's attention was caught by two heads poking out of their seats rows and rows ahead. One of them was Olivia. The other one was...
"Isn't that Phoebe?!" Eric said, eyes squinting. "What's she doing here? I thought the buses are arranged per section? Isn't she from another class?"
"Er, maybe they made some, er, arrangements..."
Eric squinted in front of David's face and stared at him for a long period of time.
"Why are you looking at me like that?!"
Eric rubbed his chin dramatically. He then remembered the scratched-out names in Lexa's list, the rewritten names, Lexa's sweet, innocent smile, and the fact that Phoebe was ogling at them from afar, that girl with big, round eyeglasses who looked like a thirsty owl.
Then Eric noticed, two or three rows of empty seats in front of them. Why do they have to sit here, at the back, when the fact is, there are still empty seats left to fill!
"Did you arrange these seats?!"
David sighed, then smirked naughtily. "Can't help it. They're really trying to keep us apart."
"They?!"
"Destiny, fate, gods, whatever it is!" David exclaimed. "In this kind of situation, we have to put things in our own hands, shouldn't we?!"
