CHAPTER 23

Milo

REN

IT COULD HAVE been any other Hans.

Hans Lippershey. Hans Christian Anderson. Hans Bailey. Hans Cooper.

No.

Not really, no.

The universe decides to plant the bomb right by my very face, 24 inches away in expensive casuals, smelling of airplane air.

It's the Hans.

Hans the honey lover who claims to pay kids to play with him.

The Hans who entirely ruined any remaining chances for me to get adopted by his family a decade and several years ago.

I stared hard down his palm. I hid every strand of stray rage that's probably radiating off of me. He seemed not to notice any changes in me as he took in my handshake that lasted for only a mere second.

"And you are...?"

He was waiting for me to speak as I fiddle my fingers around the glass of water. I was taking all of my strength not to spill it over him. I still have to make sure he gets what he deserves after this. I need a well-intended plan of getting back at him.

"Milo."

I whipped my head over Knight's direction and immediately read his face. He was offering me an escape route. Without even giving Hans another glance, I nodded and stood up as I followed him out of the restaurant.

"DON'T YOU WANT anything else?" he casually asked as we strode down the shelves. I was hugging my fair share of the deal—the biggest bag of Milo tonic food drink in the store and I'm looking quite the happiest kid in the aisle.

"Wala."

"Wala?"

I shook my head.

He nodded and led me to the cashier.

"I closed a deal today. Let's celebrate."

"Ha? Deal?"

"Yeah. We closed a deal a few minutes ago."

"I did nothing."

"Sure. He never asked girls' names before," he spoke more likely to himself, unintended for me to hear but I did anyway.

As we walked around the commercial lot, he pointed to a convenience store and said, "Follow me."

I walked behind him as he grabbed junk foods from here and there. "Do you want pizza?"

Hindi ako sanay sa ganitong trato sa akin ng kahit na sino, lolo na sa kanyang hindi ko naman nakalakihan. He acts like a father who is obsessed with fattening his child.

"Kakakain lang natin, Knight."

"For dinner, I mean."

"Hindi ka magluluto?" I pouted and he caught me making out a sad face.

"I'll cook tomorrow morning."

"Ayoko pizza," katuwiran ko para mapilitan siyang magluto. Gustong gusto ko talaga ang luto niya. Higit sa lahat, naaaliw ako sa bawat pagkakataong nagluluto siya ng mga pagkaing hindi ko lubos akalaing pwedeng lutuin.

Namulot siya ng dalawang bote ng Cali Shandy at isinama ito sa mga dinampot niyang items sa basket.

Good thing he was carrying it this time however it does not even make me look less like his maid.
