Boys and Snuggles

GAREN WAS SURPRISED to see me at the police desk as early as five in the morning. The cops were already up that fast as they were phoned by the agency that Garen Lim went to their desk and demanded a refund for his credit card advance for not delivering the car to him.

"Ren? What are you doing here?"

I had no time to answer when they brought him inside the room.

"Nakakapagod sundan itong kasong ito. Bakit sumasanga-sanga?" reklamo ko habang hinihilot ang aking sintido. Tatlong araw na lamang ay bibiyahe na ako at hindi ko lubos maisip na may iniisip akong kaso habang nasa exam. Limang araw ako sa loob ng AFPMC at hindi ko alam kung makakaya kong okupahin ang mga hindi ko mababalitaan sa tamang oras tungkol sa kasong ito.

"Relax. Just answer them if they ask you. I'll take care of everything while you're away," Knight reassured me with a gentle rub on my back.

Ilang minute rin silang nasa silid hanggang sa lumabas si Lt Damaso at sinabing, "Mr. Lim is Miss Daisy Velez's ex-boyfriend."

I didn't know that. But so what?

They sent two cops today to fetch the sisters and hold them for questioning and there came their mouthful protests as they were actually being guided extra carefully inside the station. Tumalim ang tingin ng magkapatid sa akin nang ako ay makita. Nalilito naman ako kung sino sa kanila si Abby at sino si Daisy pero dahil magkapatid naman ay hindi na ako mag-aabala pa.

"Ipinapahiya mo ako!" duro niya sa akin samantalang hinaharangan naman ako ni Knight sa pagtayo niya sa harap ko. "Isusumbong kita sa Daddy ko!"

They led the girls to the room where Garen is and we waited again.

"Wala akong nakikitang rason para malagay ako sa ganito," bulong ko. Hindi na ako sigurado kung si Knight ang kausap ko o ang sarili ko pero alam ko namang nakikinig siya sa akin.

"We do not hold what other people think," aniya.

He handed me a bottle of water and I didn't hesitate to gulp down more than half of the contents.

"What do you say, let's go home and come back here when they have some whole new lead?"

I nodded and we informed the other detective about it. I could really use some sleep.

WE SLEPT FOR about two hours before Knight decided to take me jogging around the park again. I didn't protest because I might just desperately need it so I could sweat the tension in my chest off.

We stopped as we finished four complete rounds and walked to cool down. He walked behind me and pulled my small towel so he could pat the sweat off my back. I did the same for him.

"Bakit mo nga pala naisipang huwag munang tumuloy sa New York?"

He rubbed the towel on his hair and said, "Funny thing you asked. Hindi ako aalis hangga't hindi nasasara ang kaso."

"Pero paano ang business mo? Pwede ka namang tumuloy habang nasa AFPMC ako. Hindi naman basta-basta doon."

Hinarap niya ako at kiniskis ng bimpo ang pawisan kong noo. "It can wait. And who knows, maybe tomorrow we could already close the case."

"How sure are you?"

"Don't you want this to get done?"

"Of course I want. But—

"Reasoning ka na naman. Isa pang ikot."

"Pero—

"Answering back now? Make that two."
