“I'm pretending to be friends with Ren now, could you believe it?” I ask Ryan, watching as he lights his cigarette.
I can tell he’s still in shock because of what happened last night, but he easily acts normal.
He nods his head as he inhales, turning his head toward me after blowing the smoke from his lips. “I’ve noticed. A couple of the nurses pointed it out since you two have been the latest entertainment,” he says laughing toward the end. “How’s that going?”
I don’t answer right away, because I’m not sure how. How is it going?
I think it’s going well...
Yeah, I had to bring Jena out, but I don’t think she’s got that much control over me. I’ve known where Dane’s drugs have been since I put them there, and even after bringing her out, have yet to touch them. Jena has a hard time turning drugs down; I’m stronger.
I mean, sure. I let Evan give me head… and I gave Ryan head, but if that’s the worst that Jena will get? Hayden’s life could handle it.
It’s not like I’ve got Tyler anymore; I’m allowed to engage in sexual activity.
“Not too bad!” I respond after a few seconds, excitement growing in my voice. My plans aren’t going to shit like they usually do! “I’ve got some plans in the work that’ll crush her. And befriending her, only to follow through with them? That’ll only throw more salt on the wound!”
Ryan raises his brow, confused for a moment before falling into laughter. “You sound like a crazy person,” he tells me, taking another drag of his cigarette “What are these plans?”
I consider of telling him about Evan, and how I somehow got him to semi-sleep with me. I’m pretty sure everybody except upper management knows about him and Ren, so I’m sure he’d be able to conclude my plan with that information.
Plus, I tell him everything! I mean… he’s been my best friend.
Something inside of me doesn’t allow me to tell him though.
“It’s a secret, ” I whisper, leaning myself close enough to his ear to where I know it’ll fluster him. “I guess you’ll have to wait and see!”
He turns to me with his brows raised, but doesn’t press it. Instead, he rolls his eyes with a smile and looks away. “If you say so!”
Moments of silence pass with both of us sat leaned up against the brick half-wall behind us. We stare off into the distance and wander off into our heads.
Ryan jerks beside me, turning to face me with a look of both surprise and urgency.
“Oh, yeah!” he exclaims. “I brought something for you, but for later's break!.”
I’m intrigued in an instant.
He brought something for me? He smuggled something into the children’s ward of a mental hospital, without being paid, for me?!
“What is it?!” I ask, excitement clear in my voice. I hang on to his shoulder with both of my arms as he playfully tries to pull away.
He’s blushing again but still turns to me.
“It’s a secret,“ he whispers, mimicking my tone from just a few moments ago horribly but with an adorable effort. “Guess you’ll have to wait and see!”
